Stumbled upon two repair manuals for the 1996 LX 450 as shown. Notice the covers are different. Both have publication number RM482U on the cover. The manual that is still in plastic wrap (no truck picture) is about an inch thicker. Does anyone know if the content is different? I don't want to open the wrapped manual because I might end up selling it and would probably get more if it's still sealed. If nobody knows the difference, I'll open it and report my findings.

EDIT: One more thing... The manual on the right, without the truck picture, was bought from a Lexus dealership. The manual with the truck picture was bought from a private party.

mine is like the one on the left, purchaced early 2004.

possibilities

A. it is a counterfit and not printed the very thin paper the real manuals use
B. it is a more complete manual that includes some of the other manuals such as the EWD, NCF, coillision repair, AT overhaul etc.

unwrap it, the bag does not look factory anyway and does not really effect value as long as the manual is in like new condition. I got more for my silverado's manuals (5 book set) on Ebay than I paid for them and they had greasy finger prints.

one may be a counterfeit or another country's edition, but if the manual number is the same, presumably it should have the same info, I would think...
and yes, the sealed package would make it easier to sell I would think, but if there is a chance it's not legit, I would open and check first.

The thin one is an original printing, the thicker one is a re-print. The originals were printed in Japan and the re-prints in the US.

Leave it to DA MAN to know the answer!

My manual (truck picture) came from the Toyota material distribution center, I would think that the dealers would get them from the same place.

Crack that baby open and see whets inside, if it does have more info then you can use that to get more money for it

ahh ok

After much peer pressure I unwrapped the "USA" manual ;p. Just as Dan said, the paper is thicker but the contents are the same.

Funny thing is that I just bought the USA manual from the Lexus dealer and the binding is already falling apart ! Meanwhile the used "Japan" manual is still in top shape :grinpimp:!

seams to be a lot of that going arround, I am continously annoyed by tthe lack of quality in many American proiduced products, we have the ability to out manufacture anyone but reguarly fail to, "cheaper" seams to be the main drive.

the BEST ENGINE MANUAL is ....

1996 80 series

-- the original TOYOTA manual?

-- The Chilton's manual?

-- The Haynes manual?

Your best advice, please.

Printed copies of all Toyota, Scion, and Lexus service support information can be purchased directly from the Toyota Materials Distribution Center or MDC. The MDC stocks printed versions of most Toyota service information products, including legacy model information that is not available on this site.

Note: Certain inventory items are produced in limited quantities and may not be reprinted or reissued once initial inventory is depleted.

MDC telephone operators accept Visa and MasterCard credit card orders, Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM Pacific Time.

To place orders please call 1-800-622-2033

Also get the wiring diagram manual wile you are at it. If you do nto have a oweners manual now would be a good time to get it, same place,

There are other many other manuals availabe also, but that is the core that most people need.

I am kinda tired, so maybe im not seeing the amount for the FSM!?!?!

call the MDC they will tell you how much it is before you order it.

At our local (southern R.I) Toyota dealer today, we were quoted $125 for the '96 LC FSM. A bit dear...

Any other way to get it?

call the MDC it should be a lot cheaper than that, my 96 LX was.

If you want cheaper still get a electronic copies online for $10 see the FAQ. I like having both.
