173K miles, no signs of anything wrong. Tore into it as "preventative" and low and behold I saw a very familiar image.

First pic is of #6, second pic is #1 (sorry for the blue tones but was working under a blue shade)

No signs of anything else but that sure is scary - especially considering I had it supercharged from 90K to 125K and turbo'd from 135K to 173K.

The head needed resurfacing lightly but tested out "good". All of my exhaust valves were leaky so it's getting a valve job while at the machine shop.

More later.

Did you finally look in the valvegrind set?.......

URGENT, no kidding.

Be sure to get the OEM valve seals out of the kit and take them to the machine shop so that they do not supply generic ones.

ok, ok, ok MOM! I'm getting up - I swear....

:flipoff2:

yes, I lookie-looed in that there box and got them itty bits to the machine shop. the shop serves about a dozen new car dealerships, including two toyota, and he was very, very familiar with the old #6!

If you carefully study the fire-ring movement on #6 and then look at the new head gasket, it will become aparent that somebody figured out that there was an issue there and quietly fixed it.

this whole HG thing is ticking me off....

funny i was just going to post a question who has the most miles on original HG.
I just turned over 125 and was starting to sweat a little...173 makes me feel like i have a little time (waiting for my slow work season). Thanks clownmidget

Well we will probably have another data point here in a day or two.

Apcoleman called me yesterday on his way home from CMCC and said he was pretty sure he just blew his HG sky high. So I'm sure we will have another one to look at and examine as far as failure.

Is there a way to find out if the HG was change on my New acquired Rig? Mine is a 96 FZJ80 with 130K on it. Maybe using the vin# on some sort of database? I have done head gasket work on a couple of my cars and can do the work myself, but like any other HG job it can be expensive.

Can we see any signs of the HG going out on the 80s?

230K and still on the orginal one........

But after this post, it will blow tomorrow:rolleyes:

After a $370 tow my rig is at the shop and later tomorrow morning I am leaving the country so it will be taken care of when I am gone. When ever I get a full report I will let you guys know. This sucks:mad:

tony-
have the shop replace all the hoses while they're in there. it's only another couple of hundy and you'll have even more piece of mind.
have you left specific instructionwith the shop in the event that the head is too far warped to be milled. this is a big $$ job that could easily get out of hand if a shop has been given carte blanche on the repair!

best of luck.

They cant get to it until Monday so I gave them my dad's cell number and they are going to call him and he will be making the calls for me while I am out of town. I did make sure to tell them to do all of the hoses as well. Having them slap on a supercharger at this point is really tempting though:grinpimp:

185k still OEM

I refuse to answer the mileage question on the grounds I may cause my headgasket to blow. So I will provide a picture of the mileage taken about 2 months ago.

Your temp is high.

It probably blew when you took the picture.

Um,

Thats the oil pressure.....;)

No, I think he's referring to the inaccuracy of the stock temp gauge so when it's slightly above level like that it's about 220-deg :hillbilly: :flipoff2:

go back to yer vacation...

Yup..

If the coolant temp was the where the oil pressure was, it would have been my wife driving. "Honey, the truck has been running funny for a while"
