I have been reading about oil at "Bob is the oil guy" for the diffs/transfer.

He highly recomends Schaeffer oil...in particular the model 167.

Does anybody have any input on using this gear oil: 167 Moly Full Synthetic Gear Lube 75W-140? The 100 manual calls for 75w-90, but I live in a hot climate that once in a blue Moon might hit 40 degrees F. Usually it is around 100 give or take.

The big difference is this Syntheitic has Moly.

I have been using there grease in the drive shafts....no cluncks :)

Looks interesting but looks like the smallest package is a 38lb pail. Any idea what it costs?

I have two 100's so the pail should last a change and a half. I'm waiting to hear how much from the sales rep.

It is spoken of very highly in reviews.

Since they do not tell you how much moly is in the oil, I can't really say you are gaining anything over a Mobil 1 or Amsoil gear lube. I reckon the 140# top end weight is not going to help with MPG's and Mr. T picked the 90 # for a reason.

Gotta' agree.

I use 75W-140, but not in the LX...it goes in big *** Dana axles in a truck that hauls horses all summer.

Mobil 1 or Valvoline synthetic 75W-90 works great in the LX in axles and transfer case. Good choice on synthetic, I just think the 140 is a bit thick.

This is the reason I posted this...Mr. T did indeed spec 75W-90 for a reason.

In my market I can only get Mobil 1 in dino.... no synthetic :frown:

I have had great success with Reline products and they make a wide range of gear lubes, maybe you could find it locally.

Mobil 1 is only synthetic?

I'm thinkin' he's meaning Mobil (non-syn) and writing Mobil 1 (syn).

Steve

Mobil 1 75-90 here is dino oil. (non-syn)

The Schaeffer I am asking about is indeed synthetic.

ARB lockers not compatible with Mobil 1?

Just read this deeply hidden message from ARB Air Locker | ARB USA Blog and I loaded up my diffs with $50 worth of the Mobil 1 over the weekend. Anyone have any additional info about the compatibility of ARB lockers and the limited slip compatible oils?

Just wondering if this necessitates changing the diff oil out again  ???

^ Unless you filled your diffs with "limited slip" type diff lube and/or added a "limited slip" type modifier/additive there's nothing to worry about. Although I've changed back to dyno for diffs due to frequent water crossings the past few years I've run Amsoil syn for...hmmm close to 100k miles without issue.

The mobil 1 contains a limited slip additve:

"Mobil 1 Synthetic Gear Lube LS 75W-90 contains special friction modifiers designed for limited slip-type differentials. In most applications, the addition of special LS (limited slip) additives is not required. For axles requiring the highest level of limited-slip performance, OEM specific LS additives can be added to this fluid."

I don't think the Amsoil has this additive?

Gotcha. Dunno...I guess I'd call ARB and speak to an engineer. But given the ARB doesn't have LS type clutch plates I'd guess you would be fine running Mobil 1.
