When I bought my 97 cruiser, the dealer did the birfield repack. So far I have nothing but what I think is a normal coating on the "ball" on the front axle and not "birfield soup". Ive noticed that a bunch of people in here add grease to the knuckle as mentioned a few threads ago. This got me thinking so I checked mine. They seem to be a little less than the recomended 3/4 full. I know I need moly fortified grease to add in here. However I have read that mixing different brands/types of moly grease can cause the grease to break down. Is this true? I called the dealer and they did not know the brand that they used in mine. I dont want to mess up my fresh grease by adding another moly grease that may break it down. Should I risk adding a possibly different brand of moly?
thanks in advance

How did you judge they did fill the cavity 3/4 full?

I don't think mixing brands would cause any problem at all. I've heard folks say mixing moly with bearing grease was not a great idea, but I don't see where that would be a problem either.

I've heard of problems if you mix greases with different bases (soap base vs silicon or something like that). Bobistheoilguy has info on this.

I aint no greasologist, but:
1) Try to talk to the parts desk people or the actual techs to find out what kind of grease they use.
2) If you can fish enough, say a teaspoon or so, out of your knuckles, run your own experiment...blend it with the brand you want to use and let it sit for a week or two, or maybe a month. If it doesn't harden up, you're fine.
3) I have mixed different brands and types of greases experimentally...just to see what would happen...and only once when I mixed a common "car type" lithium based grease with some exotic aviation synthetic did it react and harden up.

Im not sure if they did fill the cavity to 3/4 full. I talked to the tech that did the work on the axle and he could not remember what kind of moly grease he used. The dealership was an Infinity dealer and the tech said he just had some delivered from Autozone. Luckily he seemed to know what he was doing as they used to toyotatech site to get instructions on how to do it. The tech had never seen a birfield axle before. Ive put close to 5000 miles on it since ive gotten it and no trouble yet. I was just trying to prevent problems. Ill probgo with the idea mentioned above and dip out a little and see if i mix it if i get any sort of reaction
.

You might check the labels. I know the Amsoil Moly grease says that it can be mixed with other types of Moly grease. If it says it is compatible maybe some say which aren't compatible?

I got my moly grease at the Autozone, and the only non-synthetic version I recall them having was Coastal, in a black and silver tube. If you do the dip stick and pull out black, I'd bet that's what it is. Besides it's the cheapest one, so you wouldn't be out much on your science experiment.
