Coming up to a oil change soon on the 1989 FJ62 and have been torn between Rotella T6 5w40 with 900ppm zinc and the Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel 5w40 with 1300ppm zinc... Aside from the zinc level, any other insight/info/etc. one can add to help clarify? (I know, another oil thread!)

Also, as of 2017 or so, I believe the T6 lowered the zddp/zinc level to its current 900 level so this is more about what is on the shelf today and not a few years ago...

In this case 1300 would be preferred over 900, but either will be fine.

But if I lived in Tucson I would run Mobil one 15w-50. I forget it's actual zinc #'s but it was acceptable the last I checked.

In our trucks there is no 'best' oil. Pick a good one and run it.

Tucson? 15w-50 seems like a no brainier to me.

The reason zinc has been all but eliminated in modern oils is because it drastically shortens the life of the catalytic converter.

Take a look at Castrol Edge 5W-50. It's been formulated for "classic engines with flat tappets". Has extra zinc too. I ran that for 29 years in my 2F. Really awesome oil. Had 300,000 miles on it & still running strong. Zero sludge.

15w40 Rotella in my 124k 60. Tucson as well.

PS- not looking forward to the cold/possible snow on the valley floor.

M1TD is great stuff. I ran it for years in my PD engine VW diesel with the known cam wear issues and never had any marks or noticeable wear on the cam.
