Wmart has a sale on M1 oils and I picked up a 5qt bottle for $25 which is pretty dang cheap now that Rotella Synth is $22 for 4qts. They had all flavors on sale which is unusual - normally their sale has just this or that flavor.

Anyhow, I reread the FAQ on oil from Cary and crew and am thinking perhaps the Truck/SUV M1 might have been the better value at $24 for 5qts. Wonder if it's (T/Suv) still a Group V base, vs the EP still a GroupIV?

Word of warning. I am not sure what is wrong with Mobil 1 T/SUV from Walmart but it is causing problems in all cars I have. Especially making LC engine run loud. Something changed around a year ago. Until then I had no problems. I am phasing out from using it.
I realized that oil becomes very water like after less then 2000 miles. Something is not right with it.

Do you really think that the Mobil1 from WalMart is a different blend than the Mobil1 at a parts store, or are you insinuating that Mobil1 has changed their formulation altogether?

Thanks for the heads up Doug. I've been using the standard M1 10w-30 from Walmart in my WRX and 80 and the Backstone report tells the tale. This oil is doing its job well....

Let us know how the EP is working for you. Will you keep the same service interval or extend it? Per the M1 website that stuff can be run up to 15,000 miles! Apparentley EP contains 50 percent more SuperSyn than the standard Mobil 1...not sure what that is, but sounds good.

M1 15W-50 from Walmart for the past several years. Blackstone report is all thumbs up.

I dont know, I could have hit bad batch or something but something is seriously wrong with that oil. I use same oil for all my cars and all started having problems at about the same time (about the end of the year of 2008.) I used 5w-30 t/SUV for long time so I know how my cars acted/sounded on the same oil before. Something has changed and oil becomes very quickly bad (waterlike consistncy). Cars develop noisier engine with the miles, before they get to 3000 miles you can hear clear difference.
I am afraid to put 5W-30 from Autozone to check if that's related only to jags from Walmart. I still have 5 jags of unopened oil so I am gonna probaly use that on my lawnmower or something but it is not going to the engine.
The sadast part is I had put that thing in my LandCruiser which developed that insine knock at startup. I think oil just runs down the engine so good that at startup there is not enough to shield metal. :crybaby:
P.S. My plan is to send oil samples when I find time.

do they have the gear oil on sale as well??

Two years ago O'Reilly's had a rebate on Quaker state synthetic and Valvoline synthetic. You could get 6 qts of each and get a full rebate. I bought around $600 worth and filled out a rebate form for my house, my parents, my wife's parents, close friends, etc. I still have a few more oil changes to go before it's all gone. I keep waiting for them to run another promotion so I can stock up again.

I haven't seen gear oil either at Wal-mart.

Just checked my local Walmart and noticed that they even had Mobil 1 0w-30 on sale too. It can be direct replacement to 5w-30 according to Mobil spec. Does anyone have any experience of using 0w-30 over the 5w-30?

I have been running that in mine, she purrs and seems great.

I've been using M1 5W-30 from Costco for years, never a problem. They run a coupon every so often and I stock up for $24/6qt case. I also just bought a case of Castrol Syntech from them. 10w-30 for $19.97. Costco rocks!

I've also got Supertech 75W-90 syn blend in the LX diffs. At $5/qt it "seems" to be performing fine. I'd be willing to bet that it's made by M1 judging from the bottle.

RedTacoma,

My '96 also has the "knock" at start-up. It has done it since I bought it @ 109k mi. (now 116k) I don't think it has anything to do with the oil. Try cleaning the throttle body. I've heard that will eliminate the sound, although I've not gotten around to it yet myself.

YMMV.

The important thing is that the engine has oil in it. Just remember that.

Sorry, I just read the post again and noticed it was different than what I thought. No experience with 0w-30. Don't know why you would need it in the US except for maybe Alaska and the extreme northern states.

Thanks Thermodyn
Throttle is on my To Do list.
First front axle, then leaking PS then throttle.
I now have Shell 5-40 in it and knock is still there but it is much less severe and it sounds like metal hitting metal in the oil bath . Before, sound was like metal hitting clean metal.(knock with the ring to it)
I was wondering if I need to rebuild maybe oil pump and if that would help.
I am wrenching on that thing so much my wife is going to kick me out of the house. But I want to have truck rebuild before winter so I can go on every snow run there will be :bounce::steer:
