We just bought our first home and are slowly knocking out various projects. A full kitchen remodel is a ways off yet, but in the short term I would like to modify the existing dishwasher set up. Currently there is a 17.75" dishwasher, that for our growing family is inadequate. I would like to install a full size 24" dishwasher, but need to modify the cabinet to between the dishwasher and wall.

I am looking for any suggestions.

Thanks!

Install 2 24's. My brother just remodeled their kitchen, they installed 2 dishwashers, that way they just rotate the dishes from 1 to the other. 1 is alway clean & the other is being filled w/dirty.

I do like that logic! But we need to retain some cabinet space.

Remove the cabinet on the left and bring it to a cabinet shop and have them cut it down 6" or so.

The ending goal would be to have an opening for the dishwasher right at 24" top and bottom

If the cabinets are a little out of level add to that number so you can make it work

Tough question.

A cabinet shop could certainly do it, but it might be pricey.

Check at Lowes or HD for a knock down cabinet and see if you can match the doors and drawer. May be cheaper.
You would probable need a 1" or 2" spacer.

You know you will have to remove (or at least lift) the counter top to remove/replace the cabinet.

Thats a tough one. I was a general contractor for many years and have run into this before. The way that cab is laid out your only real option is to take the cabinet out and find an Amish or cab shop to reproduce it smaller. Amish will be your least expensive route. Those cabs look to be a decent quality. Shouldnt be to hard to make the cabinet, matching the stain is the magic. Good luck

Thanks for the advice guys! I am looking into a few cabinet shops this weekend.

@94SRUNNER Which is more important - cabinet space or not having to hand wash any dishes? You might be surprised how much that DW can hold if things are place inside in a neat, orderly fashion. I only mention this because I know lots of people that just throw in any old dish or pot with no respect to order (plate, cup, plate, salad spinner...well, it's full now). Hand wash the big awkward stuff for a week and see how it goes.

Ha. That drives me crazy.

My wife and kids just drop stuff in there any which way, with no understanding how the washer works. Plates facing the wrong way, knifes sticking up, tupperware placed so that it will get blown over and fill with water. Pitiful I tell ya, Pitiful.

John, I appreciate where you are coming from. Cabinet space is a premium of course, but we have a fair amount a space to work with. As for the dishwasher we currently have, we optimism the space as best as possible. At this point in life, time is what matters most.

Currently my plan is to pull the cabinet. Install a full size dishwasher. Modify the cabinet to a retain the drawer, albeit about 7" narrower. And finally remove the cabinet doors and leave it open with the shelves exposed.
