I've got a lead on a complete drivetrain out of a 75 mine truck. It's a 3b and it comes with everything in the drivetrain all the way to the lug nuts as the guy described. He wants $1,200 (US or CA I don't know yet) for everything. I just starting talking to him, so is there anything I need to watch out for? Also, I'm guessing it would be about a 12 hr drive, so I'm assuming that gas would be cheaper than shipping. What's it going to take paperwork wise to get that load back across the border into the US? Where would I get the paperwork and who do I need to contact at the border?

The 3b would be 24v correct? How much of a nightmare is wiring up a 24v motor in a 12v fj40? I reaallllyyyy hate wiring. Can a 3b be made 12v?

ANY words of encouragement, discouragement or otherwise would be great.

Thanks.

I can answer only a minimal fraction of your questions: The 3B can run on 12 Volts-1985 BJ70 were 12 volts with two batteries in parallel.

More information for you

I have BJ70's most are 24v however I picked up 85' parts BJ70 that was 12v. here are the things that you need to change if you have a 24v and you want to be 12v:

Glow plugs
Alternator
Starter
Edic
Tach (input maybe)

The glow plugs are not a big deal, of course I am assuming you do not have the computer timer that goes with it nor any of the electronics.

The alternator is more difficult because you have the vacum pump mounted on the back of it so you will need to locate a 3B 12v alternator (you must run the vac pump for brakes/clutch booster - clutch booster is 70 series not 40 series)

Starter is not big deal just need 12v 3B series starter

Same goes for the edic.

Hope this helps.

G'day,

Michael

Aren't mine trucks normally 12V anyway?

Dave

That would be sweet.

Is there a standard as to what the mine trucks got for gearboxes? Where they all 4spds or is the 5spd standard?

all I know is what i have heard......and that is that mine truck drivetrains have been used REAL hard. think many of them have been in low range for all their lifes also.

Yup!
If it came out of a mine 75 it will be 12v electrics.. if it came out of a mine it will be low on KMs an very high on hours and abuse, but there are exeptions.. if it came out of a potash mine look out.. extremely corrosive to metal and aluminium parts..

I would get some pics sent down before you waste 24hrs of roadtrip. At $1200cad or US I am suprised and suspicious that it didn't get snapped up by someone up in Canada.
Perhaps there is someone in Canada that can have a look at it for you.

2 motors
2 trannies (4 spds)
2 tcases
fr/rr axle complete with housings (Ripped apart for new bearings)
fr/rr driveshafts
4 3rds - 2 good 2 parts
and boxes of stuff I have yet to go through
Not sure on valveing of motor, I think its' the same as a bj40...not sure...

The truck only ran in the mines for a year and a half, so at the MOST I think the motor only was 25 - 30000 kilometers on it. It was a service truck for when the big trucks and tractors break down in the mine they can go and fix it while its down in the shafts. Motor ran strong when taken out of service
I'm asking $1200 usd. This is a steal of a deal for everything I have. Theres a 2Lt diesel on ebay and the guy wants $1500 for just a motor! Let me know either way if your interested still or not. I've been lookking for a 40 myself to put this into but unable to fid one for cheap.

I sat down with the map yesterday, it's almost 1300 miles up there from my place. I sure thought Winnipeg was closer than that. Anyways, I think I'm going to pass. It's just too far to go check on some parts. I'm sure I'll regret not pursuing it farther.

Sheldon or anyone else, if you are REALLY interested in looking into this then send me a PM and I'll get some contact info for you.

Thanks Dave.. I have been spoiled playing with ex JDM Cruisers too long now.. I wouldn't touch any ex mine stuff. You should try and get some pics of the stuff so we can all see what 1.5 years of mine service looks like.
