I have a 89 BJ73 RH drive with 50,000 km on it. The 3B that I have in it is getting around 22 to 23 MPG (imperial gal.) on the highway @100km/h. Is that in the ballpark or is it thirsty?

that sounds a little thirsty if it's a stocker....any mods? roof rack, tyres, gears etc?? If it's bone stock and you're figuring in IMP gallons (4.55 litres), you should be getting closer to 30 or so. When mine was bone stock I could get 35 on highway trips. Now I'm lucky to get 20...too many fuel sucking mods

No she's stock. No rack or other gear. I'm running 31's for tires but that should not make that big of a difference

THats a nice low mileage cruiser. Im guessing its a JDM import.
I would agree from what Ive heard that it is a little thirsty on fuel.

There is a lot of things in the fuel system that can affect the fuel consumption.
IF you tell us more about your cruiser Im sure someone will help.

you have a 3B II in there so you have the rotory pump. you should be at the 30 mpg mark. i would get it checked out.
a BJ61 i had here got 30 mpg at 120 k/h so you can use that as a reference...

I don't know what else to tell you about her.... runs well...although I have nothing to compare it to as far as power on the highway. Easy starting when its cold out (-20c) just shakes , rattles and rolls for a minute. No problems with her.
It was supposed to have the fuel system checked and flushed before I bought her...that included pump timing and injectors. It was suggested that I adjust the pump timing a fraction either way to see if the mileage improves. Any advice?
Any advice Wayne on where to take it in Alberta?...Thanks

I had a BJ60 with the 3B and H55 tranny.
I was running 31" BFG AT and I got about 30mpg.
Or 9.64L per 100KM.

Typically speaking I drove at about 100kph.
The BJ60 is also a bigger and heavier truck.

So I would imagine a stock 73 with a strong engine and a 5speed would be doing about 32-33. Is yours a 5speed or Auto?

Cheers,
Nick

Do a compression test 1st, then go to pump adjustment and injector building from there. You do have a fresh fuel and air filter...correct?

It

Ive never had to do the cold starts with a diesel in the climate you guys have in Canada but I thought it would settle in to a smooth idle sooner than a minute once its fired.

If the pump timing and injectors were done there shouldnt be a need to adjust it either way.
Looks like you need a good diesel shop.

I guess I exaggerated a bit when I said a "minute".... it smoothens out quickly. The pump timing and injectors were done but how good is the question. I'll take her in to get checked. Thanks....

My BJ73 gets a reliable 21mpg on the highway (U.S. gallons), and I am quite satisfied with that.

fuel enconomy

i have a 3f motor and that gets about 8kms a liter on the open road about 100kms what dose yours get around town its strange ive recently up graded from a bundera 2.4 which only got 6 to 7kms to the liter but then again it was a small motor pushing a heavy car but they are landcruiser they have reputation for being thursty

30 mpg it's to me simple amazing .. reallly .. I never get this numbers with my 2H when mi HJ-60 was stock .. but yes is a bigger engine and to more cilinders.
