Well, FedEx just dropped off 4 Michelin 11.00x16's this weekend and now I need rims. I was going to just swap them onto my stock alloys but, was thinking the look of black steel would be much nicer. I know the stock rims are 8" wide with 4.5" of backspacing and was wondering if I should mount the 11.00's on a 7" rim and what should the back spacing be? I am thinking 4" to increase the track width a bit. Will post pics to show how they fit with 6" of lift.

4" backspacing on a 7" rim isn't going to increase track width much. 1" overall 1/2" per side. That is not significant especially with that much lift. The advantage is that is an easy to find rim. Personally I'd go with a lot less backspacing and make it wider for the amount of lift you are doing with that heavy of a tire.

no time to check the real facts on this, but out of (bad) memory, I'm thinking that with 4" of backspacing you are moving things out 1/2" but then the rim is 1" narrower. So isn't that a wash compared to 4.5" with an 8" as far as outer rim edge position? now of course, if the tire is the same width you are gaining a bit there on the outside edge of the tire but it may be less than with an 8" rim... but then an 11" wide tire, if that is what it is, is probably less than the 35s you have, so probably not that much difference...?

So, would a 7" rim with maybe 3" or 3.5" of backspacing work? I was just wondering what the difference would be where these tires have a 11.00 cross section as opposed to the 12.50's I'm currently running. With the 12.50's I get a bit of rubbing on the inner rear wheel well when tires are fully stuffed. Anyone run 38.5x11.00x16 swampers? These seem to have about the same specs. If so, what size rims are being used?

I ran the XLs on my 6X6 Volvo and they were useless on anything but dry rock.

I currently run the 38.5X11X16 Boggers which are great (but not very smooth).

My wheel info is useless to you guys because of the Volvo portals I'm running.

I just mounted one for a trial fit and so far so good in that they fit in the wheel wells while the vehicle is static. Flexing test will come when I decide on what rims to use. I have them mounted on the stock alloys for now. I'd like to run steel rims and ones that are 7" wide to gain a bit more bulge in the sidewall with 3.5 inches of back spacing. I'll be doing some searching on what stock Toyota steel wheels will fit. I have read something in the past about Tacoma or Tundra rims fitting? I'd like them to tuck in a bit more as I like the look of an 80 without fender flares.

TI, you didn't cannibalize this beaut 6x6 to put the portals on the 80, I hope, right?
That or a Pinz is on my list for when I get the lottery... :)

and yes, the Tundra / Seq etc steel wheels fit just fine

Tundra/Tacoma 16" x 7" steel wheels will fit, but I believe they are .5" less backspacing.

Link to some on ebay

Others have run Tundra/Tacoma rims with spacers successfully with large tires.

Here are a couple pics of the tires installed. My observations are that they are much heavier than the 315's I took off, which is fine, brake sooner. They are a bit louder on the streets. Again this is fine with me and even the wife likes the howl. They ride a bit stiffer but I would expect this being a 10 ply tire. They track down the highway at 75 mph just fine. The rubber ends on the rear fender flares need to come off. This is the only place that I may have rubbing. I am thinking of either a 2" body lift or to move the rear axle back a bit so it is centered in the wheel well better. After some flexing I will know better which direction to go. I am also thinking about removing the fender flares but am not sold on the bedliner spray in their absence. I know these tires are loud, heavy, may or may not wear well (this is not my daily driver) but, they look great, no one else has them, and they will endure the mud, rocks, roots, and other hazards that we face here in New England.

DAMN, looks good...but it appears to me that you need to do some rear axle adjusting, cause that rear tire is a little close to the front of that wheel well.

Definatly looks good, and I believe I will be following your lead with those in the next few years.

Looks very nice....

The 4.88 gears should come in quite handy now......;)

Can't find the long needle.

I think I left it stuck in Romer's 450.......

I debated adjusting my rears but when I talked to Ben at Slee he suggested that I leave them because when the tire stuffs it will move the axle back to a neutral position which is ideal.

What do those tires measure out to? The rig looks beastly.

pic of the tread? i have always thought those were sweet... would love to see how they wheel...
