I just cut rust out of the rear quarter bottoms and it had been a mouse hotel. I'm sure you don't have that problem in Cali.

Anyway, I have had them make nests with the dryer sheets I used. I have heard spearmint works good, glue traps are ok if it's not cold out. They are less sticky in the cold.

If you have one you can't get rid of, these traps are 100% effective. They are my go to mouse eradicators. Peanut butter goes in the middle bottom. No licking gently.

Looks deadly. We have had good luck with "The Better Mouse Trap", Amazon or hardware stores.

Do you actually have this model? It looks great but I get suspicious when all reviews are 5 star and entered in the last month.

I love this pic... I was really trying to grasp how this worked, but then this pic says it all .

No I don’t have it. Just saw it after some clicking and thought I’d post it. The picture is funny.

I live in pack rat, wood rat hell. Here're some observations:

- they use Bounce sheets as bed padding
- they import dog turds and cacti for building their nest
- any type of mint oil is good but you have to keep re-applying them to the cotton balls, annoying. The air is dry here.
- two places that I know they used in the 80:
1) the fresh air vent in the cowl (next to the hood, where the windshield comes down). I have a chicken wire covering the hole but wasn't able to secure it properly so they may be pushing it out of the way for ingress.
2) there are two LARGE square holes inside the body cavities in the REAR cargo area. Lie on a creeper and you'll see two large plastic covers that *should* cover up there holes. One of mine was missing and those fawkers used this as ingress. When a one pound rat gets caught INSIDE your vehicle, you begin to think "holy s***, am I driving a Land Rover?" There was this joke about a LR and a cat - google it.
- traditional spring traps didn't work well for me as the mice were able to eat the peanut butter w/o setting off the trap.
- the best traps EVER are these puppies from Amazon: http://a.co/6caknQR One of those large rats got zapped by this thing and most of its tail was outside the Rat Zapper, that's how big this SOB was!
- rats also don't like light at night so I have one of them solar charged battery powered LED flood light aimed at the engine bay. At night the light comes on automatically.
- I have a solar powered LED rope light under another vehicle that comes on all night.
- I have tried one of these but didn't find it to be too effective https://www.amazon.com/Packrat-Rodent-Deterrent-Device-RC-2/dp/B00D2AQYI2

I'll be building nesting boxes for Screech Owl next spring in order to help with the rodent population. Apparently, there aren't enough snakes at my place to keep the rodent population at bay.

Thanks. I will check for the square holes, research the lights and attracting owls.

Yes, don't trust those reviews. As for the pictures, so that's how they get in. It is all clear now.

Update. Previously after trying mothballs and steel wool we stills had lots of mice in the spring traps. Now after spraying Raid on the wires in the engine compartment and putting spearmint soaked cotton balls around we had no mice after sitting for one month. Maybe just luck.

Would like to hear about other entry points for mice into the passenger compartment of the 80. Our's were coming in the hole they made by eating away the A/C drain cover. I plug this with steel wool but they are still getting in. After reading the threads I checked and plugged

the steering shaft,
the parking brake cover,
the lo shifter cover,
the holes near the hood hinges.

I also inspected the air intake mesh cover, the gear shifter, and all the door gaskets. What am I missing?

There has been a mouse population explosion here and the danger of hantavirus is also an issue around here.

Thanks

Update and caution. Tried placing cotton balls soaked in peppermint oil as suggested. Was sick so couldn't check for two months, result: no mice and the truck still smelled like peppermint, but then I got to thinking is peppermint smell a good idea where there are bears? So didn't renew the peppermint, after another two months no peppermint smell and the traps were full of mice.

Had also sprayed Raid on wires in engine compartment as Dsrtrdr suggested. No problems so far.
