Ok,

Looking for a referal where I can buy Metric Half Moon Wrench 6 point set.

Needs to be 6 point (not 12) as I have a cat mounting nut that is 1.on there but good (yes, I have been BB for a few weeks), 2. odd angle.

I don't want to strip it which I am afraid will happen with a 12 pointer.

Thanks in advance!

Those are odd. Can't say I ever used one. Must be a weird location.
dang... yet another type of wrenches I now feel compelled to buy just in case, thanks to MUD... :)

You'll want standard and metric. Just in case. I finally ponied up and bought a set of metric adjustable wrenches to go with my standards.

Thanks for the responses,

Those wrenches are straight with open ends. Looking for halfmoon w. closed ends/6 point.

The nut/bolt in question is the rear Cat to pipe, with access limited by subfloor bulkhead/frame rail/floor, etc.

Heat/corrosion really has it on there and it's in a super tight place. All other bolts were loosened using 1/2 drive w. 6 point socket and cheater bar.

as I said I don't have those, but in a pinch can't you take a straight one, cut it short and either weld a perpendicular handle or use a closed end wrench as a lever on the stub?

That's what I've done a few times, when you need a one of a kind. Make it. Buy some cheap ones and cobble together what you need. Why spend big bucks on a set you'll never use again, even if you can locate them.

PS.... Take a six point and cut it off, then bend some round stock, for a handle and weld them together.

Not sure if the OP has a welder, but I saw San Diego in your sig, you can cruise by my place if you decide to macgyver it.

This is the set from Matco that I have. They are good wrenches, but it can be hard to justify spending so much on tools that you hardly ever use. I have used mine probably about 4-5 times total. Don't get me wrong, they can be life-savers, but they are expensive. I like the idea of cutting a wrench and welding it at a different angle.

And you will probably have a hard time finding 6 pointers simply because usually when you need a wrench like that, there isn't room to swing it, so 12 point maximizes their usefulness.

I don't know what you're working on or the extent of your work, but how about disconnecting the exhaust fore and aft then dropping the cat down? This would allow you access with 'regular' tools.

How about a pic of the offender? Surely there's more than one way to skin this cat.

Hi Gang,

No welder in this garage:-(

Buttttt, I have a buddy in encinitas who I can bribe (read beer) to help me weld. I guess it comes under the "nothing is easy" chapter.

Regarding dropping the whole exaust system, I know I will run into other problems (kinda like peaking behind walls in an old house....), thus won't go there.

I even toyed with the idea of taking it to a pro with me supplying the cat, but my experience shows that pros use heavy hands, thus other stuff will suffer collateral damage (ask me how I know...).

I'll post a pic in the next day or two.

Thanks again.

I understand you reason for asking, but I think the concept of a half moon wrench providing access in tight locations is somewhat defeated by a six-point box end. You should either try a good quality 12-point or go another route. I've had some good luck with six point sockets, wobble extensions or universal joints and long extensions.

Hi 2mbb,

I am focusing on 6pt because these are exaust monint nuts/bolts. Heat/rust.

I would like as much bearing areas as possible to prevent as much as possible stripping nut/bolt heads. the 12pt lower bearing area makes stripping of nut/bolt head corners more likely.

Do you have room for a nut splitter??

Steve

Well, got a wrench on it and it spun:-( Dang bolts/nuts were so rusty that the size shrank to a 1/2 size metric. Thus the spun nut.

Now it's off to the muffler shop w. a newly purchased cat. I'll be in there with 'em to ensure nothing else goes south.

Hi there.

Just as a point, here in Oz there is a make of spanners and sockets that go by the name of "Metrinch". They are universal in that they fit metric and Whitworth , AF and any other.

The unique feature of these scanners is that they fit the nut/bolt loosely but when they lock on, they grasp the flat surface of the bolt, not the corners, and because of this, they work very well on nuts that have been rounded off.

Ask around and see if they are sold in you area, well worth having these scanners and sockets.

Hope helps. Regards.
