I was lucky to catch a group of Turbo Diesel Military Mega Cruisers next to my fire department a few days ago. I have never a Military version in person let alone in a picture.

Anyone else seen a Military Mega Cruiser?

Here are some pics to share on Turkey Day!

The Mega Cruisers were in country with the Japanese National Guard. They were training with the Mega Cruiser off-road, with at least a dozen. As I was looking over the Cruiser driver was kind enough to open the hood and and doors for me. The Japanese guard didnt speak much english however they did call it the Mega Cruiser and were very proud of there rig. I couldnt get them to let me drive it though. There were other rigs there but no other Toyotas than the Mega Cruiser.

I now have a new obsesion...getting a Mega Cruiser into the USA.

I have seen the silver civlian model but never a military version of the Mega Crusier.

The Mega Cruiser has already shipped out, most likley back to Japan.

I believe it's a 15B turbo diesel.

How/why are these vehicles in California? Has someone imported them?

Almost ,its a 15B FTE and its found in some 4wd Hino trucks and the Toyota Coaster/Optimo also.

I would also like to know what they are doing in Cali:D!!!!

ENGINE SPECS "The 15B-FTE is a 4.1 L (4104 cc) Inline 4 SOHC Turbo diesel engine. Bore is 108 mm and stroke is 112 mm, with a compression ratio of 17.8:1. Output is 153 hp (114 kW) at 3200 rpm with 282 ft·lbf (382 N·m) of torque at 1800 rpm."

Toyota had showed the Mega Cruiser years ago at an auto/truck show. It was their answer to the Hummer. It never materialized here though......

Now THAT is a Troop Carrier...

I see them occasionally caravanning(sp) on the express way from time to time.

I've asked a military friend what they did with used/old military vehicles and he said that they just crush them or something. But I've seen them come up for sale (Mitsubishi Jeep type) every once in a while.

Thanks for the pics, Ken!

Mot :)

You can have some fun in those with their low crawler gears. I think they had Dana 40s or bigger also.
Are those ones in the pics gassers or diesel?

Looks like there's alot more interior room than a Hummer has as well. Very cool.

Just in case anybody comes across this thread again, I thought I'd throw in a correction. The MegaCruiser in the picture doesn't have a 15B-FTE, (a reasonable assumption since most did) that's a Hino N04C. Though branded as Toyotas, the MegaCruiser was built by Hino (a Toyota subsidiary) and some had Hino engines instead of the Toyota 15B-FTE.
