Hey folks...

To put it mildly I am not a rich man. I can make a big money upgrade for my newly aquired 80 about once every four months. The first thing I want to do is upgrade the suspension with a 2.5. The thing I am concerned about is this: I plan to get a Bull Bar and Tow Bumper when I can, but that could take 6 months to a year. I should get the Heavy Lift right? Is it bad to run the Heavy Lift without a lot of weight on the truck? Or do I get the Medium and upgrade the suspension again later? Give it to me straight, I can take it.

TIA

Or, just scour the classified section here for used stuff since we seem to be upgrading suspension parts quite regularly on this board! Welcome aboard.

Buy the heavy lift kit. Then find a big, dead battery and mount it in the engine compartment. That should help weigh down the front till you can afford a Bull Bar. :D

Defintely heavy and good on ya if you could find it used here. :D

You might wanna consider what tire size you plan on going with in the future and save another coupla bucks for then. IOW, do you plan on runnig 35's or bigger? Might wanna consider "J"s.

2% of one dollar.

Thanks guys... My first upgrade was a set of 285/75/16 AT/KOs and I think I'll just stick with them.

Bean, like everyone suggests you might as well go with the heavy set and do it right the 1st time.

Hi ya Bean -

Welcome !

Often times, the terms "medium" and "heavy" lift are a little ambiguous (tho we still use them...), so it helps to be a bit more specific if you want to have a better handle on what you'll end up with.

To give you a real world example, using the 850 (not J)/863 combo on mine... with the add-ons (below), two full tanks of petrol, and about 200 lbs of recovery gear/tools, I'm still 2 3/4" above stock height. (I did have to put packers in the front to level it out a bit.)

After you decide on tire size, as mentioned, you can select the springs - up or down from these - to get the desired end result.

BTW, the Kaymar in the rear has two swing gates with spare tire & petrol can.

Cheers, R -

Bean,
Going w/ Heavy set up would be okay. I have the same set up on my truck currently. The only thing I dislike is not having the truck leveled out. Hope to have ARB Bul bar on soon at which time I will put in some spacers to level out the front w/ the rear.

So overall, 850/863 would work fine for you and could save you money. You won't have to buy new springs down the line.

Hope that helped.
Steve

Like Fat Albert, make it heavy.

This is what I'm going to install on my rig since my budget is limited. I want to do it right the first time and I don't have to keep upgrading the suspension. I can use the extra money for a ARB bullbar at a later date. Thanks for this thread. :D
