I'll be in Denver for a concert in a couple weeks, and was thinking of taking Medino pass on the way back, and passing by the Great Sand dunes NP. I seem to recall a few of you have done this.

Any thoughts you would like to pass on would be appreciated.

I did it a few years ago. I'd do it again. I seem to recall there was a nice campground up there.

I highly recommend it Ron, go for it. I camped right off of the medano pass trail and there are few sites. If you're going from north to south, you'll need to air down as you exit the trail then enter the park due to deep sand. The park has a strong air comp right next to the visitor center for you to air back up as you exit. Do keep the insect repellant handy for the mosquitoes. Another camping potential is zapata falls which is on your way back toward the highway. Oh yeah, don't forget the bat caves ! Dude, you might as well just hang out there a spell 'cause San Luis valley is quite the treasure.

Thanks, I had Zapata falls on my list of POI, I'll add the bat caves. I'll air down, and I have a portable air compressor, but that's good to know, it'll probably be quicker than mine. It will probably just be a weekend thing, so I'll call this my scouting trip for next time when I have more time.
