This is a story of Geezer's 1970 FJ40

Its life like many was to be a vehicle of form, function and pure enjoyment. However when the clutch went one day she was moved into the garage to be repaired when time finally allowed, well like so many projects tend to go it was put off further and further because of whatever else was more important at the particular time since the truck was not the primary means of transportation.

Fast forward a little ways, it has now been a little over 10 years of the truck sitting in the garage and hasn't run since, and is still in need of a clutch among a few other things that have come up from sitting and may have been present when parked. That's where I come in at. I got an email from Geezer asking if i would be interested in helping out with getting this truck back on the road, I of course agreed.

I only have the 1 picture of the rig so far and a video clip that i cant get off my phone... Anyhow I will be updating this thread with pictures videos and commentary along the way, so STAY TUNED!!

On a side note, I did tinker with the truck here the other day and got her running. Still waiting on the keys tho... LOL... Ran pretty well considering the intake leaks and exhaust leaks but it did run! I bypassed the old fuel in the tank and ran it off of a gas can till I get the old tank out and either repaired or replaced tho I think we are leaning towards replacement in order to get the most trouble free use for prolong period of time.

oh and Justin if you can PM some prices that would be great!

You know i Represent ;)

I should also mention that Geezer plans on removing the rust and getting this truck back up to tip top shape and looks!
Rust isn't horrible but the passenger door does have a hole through the upper portion right below where the window goes into the door on the exterior, and a few other spots of varying condition, but nothing where you are gonna fall through the floor or anything. LOL

Anyhow here are a couple more pics.

Got a little done today.

I pulled the fuel tank out and did a little cleaning and vacuuming where it sat.

Didnt really take any pictures of how to remove it. It was a really simple and straightforward procedure and took me under 10 minutes, took me longer to vacuum everything and clean it up.

Been pluggin away at this little by little.
I pulled the carb off for the rebuild and it had many many years of corrosion, dirt and other junk all over it so i took the many hours to hand scrub it all and make it look like new again. I also noticed during the process someone had had this thing apart before which presented its own dilemmas but nothing i couldnt handle and take care of.

I dont have any pics of the carb being apart but i do have a few of it after i got it all cleaned up and back together. I also checked the fuel solenoid and it is in fact working... i think it may have been froze up from sitting so long but it is now working and we shall know soon enough if it was the issue, but im pretty sure it was.

While i had the carb off it was now time to pull the intake and exhaust manifolds to replace the gasket to fix the exhaust leak.

so i began looking for the area in which it was coming from pics 2 & 3 show my initial suspects but were quickly dismissed when i didnt see any soot build up or "burnt" areas...

so my search continued...

It was then i began to look lower...

and there it was, plain as day.
Cracked exhaust manifold, it is also obvious that the exhaust gasket on the lower portion of the manifold was also leaking as can be seen bu the soot build up. but the "sound" of the leak was definitely coming from the area with the monster crack. If you look closely you can actually see where the 2 halfs of the crack no longer line up.

Needless to say we will be needing a new exhaust manifold, heck maybe its a good time to buy a header, I'll have to get with geezer on that. (i think the header would be cool and a good time to do it) Hopefully the intake manifold is not in the same condition and will be fine. Wont know untill I get it off of there.

Here are the pics.

My first mod would be ditch those fugly rims. I know that the 40 is your friend's but you seriously need to talk to him. Those rims need to be recycled, I.E. junkyard.

LOL

funny you mention that, Ive also been asked by the owner to find proper length wheel studs to better work with the wheels. This truck being white i dont think they look all that bad, then again i wouldnt personally buy them but there alot of nice rigs on here (like some even fully restored and way nicer than anything ill probably ever own in my life) that have stuff (crap in my opinion) that i would never buy as well cause i think it is ugly or serves no purpose. but it just goes to show to each their own.
