hey all,

I am trying to build my fzj like I did my Rangie, into a grocery getting crawler. I was able to eek out 12" out of the front (radius armed) and about 16 out of the rear (3 link). I had to change the arms a bit, and relocate the shocks, but that was no biggie.

One of the first things I did was retain the springs for more side hill stability and balance. It seems that no one retains the springs on long travel 80's, why is that? Is everyone satisfied with the flex the get out of OME? or do loose springs compensate for real travel?

sorry if not hardcore enough, but I noticed the 80 forum is full of "subwoofer and mpg" posts. Pirates TLC section seems mostly 40/55/60 based.

TIA

IMO, the springs outta be retained...you can get away without it since the bumpstops will keep them from falling out completely, but I agree that the added resistance of the retained spring is important

I'd like to see the front tweaks you made to add travel....pop up some pics!

I agree, contain those coils. Nothing worse than a long travel coil setup where the coils just bounce around in the buchet :barf:

So, what kind of subwoofer do YOU have?

ahhh that's more like it! :flipoff2:

(none, I haven't removed it from the rover yet)

I haven't done anything yet, however on the rover, I built different shock towers, re-designed the radius arms and re-located the rear shocks. nothing really techy, and quite normal in the rover world. Rovers sit REALLY low stock, so you have to play a lot more to get the to the height of a stock fj. Remember stock, they came with a max tire of 29's on the 100" chassis (rangie/disco) where I think the fj came with a 32. that's a lot of difference on the starting point.

anyone got pics of retainer jobs on 80's?

The problem with most non retained coils is that they make a lot of noise and can fall out.. Nothing is worse than having to run down a hill to catch a coil....

most 80 owners (not all but most) are perfectly happy with the flex they get. Have you looked at Slee off road yet???

yeah, I have. Slee that is.

I have wheeled with robbie from there. However, I am looking to keep the height I have, trim, and add travel.

I didn't see any retainers there, but I will look again. I plan on picking their collective brain (ten minutes from the house) after they get back from cruise moab.

The springs on the shortbus are all retained, and I have longer shocks on it as well. Stop by and have a look. 30" tires with minor trimming and about 5" of lift :D

christo, your slipping. I think you meant 40's if I remember right.

Just got done with cuttin up the frame, so let me get the protection done, then I will worry about the travel. Thanks for posting up. I saw a how in the bottom mount, so I got that down. I do need to see what you did for the top.

bringing this back up. My old cruiser was crushed in an accident, and project "kermy/kermit" is beginning.

I will be running christo's 4", but I want to retain and run 12~14 travel shocks, preferably ranchos, (don't snicker, I like the adjustability, and they're cheap) and need some ideas.

for fabbing the front mounts, is there quickie mount to use? Like a f250 or such thing? Anyone got pics of theirs? The rancho 12~15 inch shocks are about the same length as coilovers, pics of those mounts would work as well.

As for the rear, I think I will just use a rubicon express conversion mount with a re-locator. Make sense?
