I've purchased two JDM Cruisers, both from one importer, who no longer imports.

I've commented in general terms about what to expect when buying a JDM from an importer.

And to those that don't know why they are paying the premiums to the importers... I have purchased 2 import TLC's from importers, and here's my perpective. You get to test drive the truck before you buy it!!! The importers are buying off photo's and mechanics reports translated from Japanese. Wayne still hasn't recieved a truck knowing what's coming in the diffs. I remember his first round of trucks that he advertized before they arrived... Not a single one showed up as he said they would. He's receieved trucks with trannies that couldn't make the drive from Vancouver to Calgary, and DOA 24V air conditioners, and had one BJ74's t-case pile up 100 days after he sold it to the guy! With my own junk, I had to replace a clutch that went 2 months after I received the truck (importer or not, there's not much for warranty on a 15 yo truck), both have needed radiators, one needed a starter, the other a vacuum solenoid, and both are burning oil and really need an engine rebuild despite their low kms. With an importer, you greatly reduce your risk. Oh, not to mention insurance. Any idea what happens if the ship your truck is on sinks while it's in transit? It's gone. Bu-bye. Well, I suppose you could have contacted Lloyds of London for insurance, as they're the only one's that will insure that vehicle for you while it's in transit. Risk.

Big end bearings. Big end of the connecting rods. Have failures of the bearings due to faulty metal and or lubrication. Tho better have someone like Greg_b describe it. I am only a parrot.

People mention this as many legit importers change out the bearings with new upon arrival. Curbers do not know what these are..Or many other shops. So it needs to be part of the budget when you compare prices from diffrent sources.

If someone is cheaper....you ask why??

Both myself and my girlfriend bought our rigs from Marko at Outback Imports about a year ago. I can't say enough good things about Marko and Outback Imports. I asked a LOT of questions before we purchases and he was very patient and answered all our questions.

His after sales support is great as well. He has continued to answer our questions long after we purchased. We have both been very happy with our vehicles and will purchase from him again (very soon probably).

hummm,
very nice Peter, i will not disagree.

3 years ago i did not know what i know now, nor did i have the contacts that i have now. Darren from Lost Guide and myself were going through a learning curve and we did loose money on some of the rigs we brought in. we were a couple of the first land cruiser importers (i think Mustang also started importing around the same time)

you failed to mention why the t/case failed. also on the same unit you failed to mention that the gent had the truck inspected by myself, then again independently by Mike at Stampede as well as his own personal inspection facility with a pre-buyer inspection BEFORE he bought the unit from us. the unit passed with flying colours all 3 times and had a comfirmed 60,000 km on it.
the t/case failed due to abuse so no warranty was issued. if the gent hadn't turned into a complete ass i would have probably helped him. he tried to get at least 4 shops to repair the t/case but his bubbly personality turned everyone away.
you also forgot to mention he is now a curber south of Calgary.

you failed to mention that i repaired the HJ61 transmission before it got sold.

both of these were the first couple we brought in.

the event Peter was stating occured 3 years ago, before Luxury was born.
yes, i used to be a curber as well.
for the last 3 years Luxury Imports is registered and licensed with the city of Calgary and is also registered and licensed by AMVIC.

cheers

the facts and only the facts:
Car Zone Calgary saleman Nigal
he has imported many JDM units. i have seen many of his imports here in Calgary and have talked to many of his buyers. he is not importing any longer but is selling North American units.

G&S should be added here.
i have bought both parts and trucks off these guys.
the parts have always been right on and well priced.
the trucks were exactlly as advertised, compression tests done. the service was second to none. very helpful.

i bought a truck off HJ61,com for parts for another gent in the states.
Eric was upfront and honest about the shape of the unit, delivered on time. he had said 80,000 miles but of course i was thinking Canadian so when it arrived with over 100,000 km i was set back for a second but it was my mistake.

non-licensed importers:
Torie Carlson Canmore
Jim Shutiack Calgary
Rene C Calgary

Thanks for the props, and this brings up an interesting point. We do not sell retail, nor wholesale vehicles, however have sold "parts trucks", and of course any parts off vehicles we have taken apart and put on the shelf.

Maybe, for the interest of all...a second list can be compiled with the vehicle importer list...of parts (new or used) companies which can supply parts for these JDM's.

I would not want our name on a strictly "vehicle" importer list. We decided long ago we would rather support those who are selling retail or wholesale on legitimate terms by not being a curber.

Seconded about G&S. Very fair prices on parts, extremely helpful, and a real pleasure to deal with.

Absolutely the best, no comparison.

EXtremely helpful, quick to reply.

sorry Greg, Sheldon.
never meant to list you in a bad light.
i edited my post

A friend of mine who isn't on this list bought an HJ61 from Rising Sun. Despite a couple of negative reports I had heard second or third hand, he was quite pleased with the transaction.

The only thing he mentioned to me (I was his technical resource) was that if he didn't know what to look for (i.e quality, compression, clutch, vacuum 4wd, hidden rust spots etc) he might not have gotten the cherry unit he was looking for.

That being said, he knew, he looked, and he is quite happy.

Craig.

You might want to add to your list ........Canyon Creek Toyota here in Calgary www.canyoncreektoyota.ca ??????. Drove by there today and they have 11 JDM'S that just arrived 1-HDJ(monster truck), 5-LJ's, 1- SURF , 1-Jeep 2-bj74's. It will be interesting to see how they sell......
