I had posted a similar thread on the diesel forum but I figure I'd post it here too.
A couple of mechanics I work with told me of a product called "Marvel Mystery Oil". They tell me that they put the stuff into their cars and they're getting better gas mileage as a result.
Has anyone heard of, or used this product?

Don't forget Amsoil, STP, Sta-power and a gazillion others.

Hey, what about using crystals and magnets? I hear they will improve fuel milaege AND as an added bonus they have curative powers!

The best part of all is you only have to buy them once! Oh, wait, I guess there'd be little profit in that scheme... yeah, better stick with additives... more profit there...

i've used it on various cars for over 20 yrs. it's seems to be pretty good stuff but i've never noticed an increase in mpg. i've put it in gas to de-gum the fuel system and oil to stop some knocking.

MMO is good stuff- lubricates the top end of an engine which possibly could result in potentially higher MPG, not because it is magical, but because it helps to clear out some gunky stuff.

Marvel Mystery Oil is better than a lot of others. You talking about putting it in the tank with diesel fuel or in with the oil. I have used some in the tank on my diesel. I use a little power service with each fillup with my diesel. If you want to clean your injectors and fuel system, then I would recommend trying diesel purge. This stuff helped my idle smooth out. Also an italian tuneup works the best on a diesel every couple of weeks. I am just talking diesel engines here since you have an HJ.

Not snake oil. Just not really meant as a "mileage maker" per se. IIRC, they don't advertise is as that either.

From my experience using it, it's a solvent for the most part. I use a mixture of Marvel, Kroil, and ATF as an engine oil system cleaner for whenever I deal with an engine that doesn't look like it's ever had an oil change. I ran it in my Duster's slant when I first bought it, and it came out all black and thickened from the sludge it absorbed. It's far better than those "engine flush" treatments you use, as the ATF provides some level of viscosity to it so that it maintains pressure to get to the bearings and rockers, and since you run it for about 45 minutes at a high idle (I set the idle to about 1500 RPM when I do it), it gets the engine good and clean. Though in the case of my slant, a repeat application was necessary. Synthetic oil comes out clean as a whistle now :D

Yes, snake oil and unecessary. The only thing that gets cleaned is the purchasers wallet.

And what makes you think it's snake oil? The fact that someone claimed it can be used as an additive to gain fuel economy?

It ain't a miracle additive. It's for cleaning, pure and simple.

The only mystery is it's longetivity, been arround as long as I have, in other words its older than dirt. Work's great on gummed up carb's and engines that have been subject to poor care. Won't fix anything just cleans it up. LOL:)
