All,

I am wondering what mapping software some of you are using for NC. I was using Oziexplorer in OR and was just wondering if anybody was using it around here. I am working on getting some maps for the state on NC.

Are you using ESRI for exploring trails? Does that software use DRG mapping files?

ArcView (ARcGIS) is very well supported in NC. The DNR has the BasinPro layers and USGS topos and DOQQ's are downloadable from NCDOT GIS web site.

Terrain Navigator and Natioan Geographic state software packages work well also.

I use Topo USA 6.0

I use this software http://www.jdmcox.com/ it is free and offer all the USGS maps of the US and photomaps............. works great for me and did I mention it is FREE :D

I haven't used ESRI software (ArcPad) for exploring trails yet (outside of work) but I've used it for plenty of work-related jobs. I plan on using ArcPad for Cullowhee unless I find a better solution which is possible for our scale and precision of mapping. ArcPad does not use DRG files directly but it is possible to use them through some file conversion.

Some data is available free-of-charge in NC, some is not - it all depends on what you want. For mapping thy Holy Ground USGS quads with any additional road files I might be able to locate will suffice. We can even just run a tracklog and I can deal with the data when I get back to my office.

If anyone has trail GPS/GIS files they want to send my way I would be glad to check them out.

I had created a Cullowhee map a long time ago that showed the route we took...

Juice,

I can bring a sub-meter GPS with the drg's on it for Culohee. They work great as backdrops and the points/lines show up just like on ArcGIS.

Only problem you might encounter w/ a sub-meter unit for extended trail mapping is lack of sufficient memory - has happened with me before. What type of file will you be collecting data in...tell me its a shp! What type of sub-meter unit do you have? I've got a Trimble GeoXT but would prefer not to use it (if I break it I don't wanna buy it).

I have a gig card in it and we have not run out of memory yet. Using ArcPar, yuppers we create/save shape files. Its a Thales MobileMapper CE. So far, no problems.

Do you mean ArcPad? Version 7 or 6? I'm in 6 and think I need to upgrade. I would love to get shps from you for club mapping. I've never used a Thales unit. I would like to see it. I need to find some good alternatives to Trimble products as they are pricey and our XT has had its fair share of issues.

I am running Oziexplorer and Topo 5.0 on my laptop. I have a custom laptop mount that is connected to my GPS. I did find some sites that I can get free DRG maps for the state of NC.

Here is a place to get just about anything GIS for NC.

I also used this site out in Oregon to find old mines to explore.
http://tin.er.usgs.gov/mrds/select.php?place=fUS37&div=fips&map=on
It will let you download a shape file for all the mines in any state. I can then import it into Ozi and it will display a waypoint for every mine.

Here is another site that I use to find old lookout towers and Bench Markers (can be fun to hunt them).

http://www.ngs.noaa.gov/cgi-bin/ds_county_sf.prl

Select your state and then you can download a shape file or just look at the data sheet for any point. I use to browse the names for lookout towers. Most lookout towers had benchmarks at them.

Does anybody know where I can find old 1910-1950's USGS maps??

ArcPad

Juice,

ArcPad 7.0...something I think, might be .02. I will bring th eunit loaded with the topo on the October outing. I have ArcGIS (ArcMap) on my pc and can bring it to.

The University of South Carolina has a good collection of old USGS maps. I don't know if they have any outside of the state. Look up the USC library. I gave them a call one day and they got back to me later in the day with a ton of info. I have seen though that most often 24k quads are not available - you have to go up to 100k which will have less detail.

I do have a map from the 1860's of Greenville County that shows a ton of old what I assume are stagecoach roads or horse trails. I'm working on a little research on this right now...just have to find some funding!

Wouldn't the library be better than some dude's stomach?
