just bought an 84 fj60 with really bad intake/ exhaust leaks. in the process of pulling the manifolds off i noticed that a few of the bolts were not even tight. got the manifolds off(finally) and layed them on a flat surface, still bolted together and there is no noticable warpage. do i still need to have them resurfaced/ machined?? or should i just replace all the gaskets, torque the thing to specs and call it good??

call it good then?? i would just hate to tear the thing apart again..

cool thanks!

Boy, do I know how that feels...It happened to me because even AFTER I got it machine (as one piece, supposedly) it was still warped and leaked. Argh!:bang:

Check the FSM on how to see if it's warped/out of tolerance.

I would get it machined just for peace of mind. Unless you are in a hurry to put it back together.

The variance that will occur because of the mounting design will be far greater than any actuall warpage that might have taken place. It's not a cylinder head, it's two long and goofy shaped manifolds with a questionable number of fasteners (as in not enough) in questionable locations holding it all together. Just line it up as best you can. If the flange thickness is different between the intake and exhaust, use shims to even it up so the nuts are pulling them both up tight against the head. Most people will take washers and cut them in half, but this is usually not needed on stock manifolds, just after market headers. And yes, the header is my personal prefference, they do run stronger.

When you re-install it and run it for a bit. Go back and retorque the bolts/nuts to the recommended torque specs.

Poser always recomends having them machined flat.

Check the area between the intake and the exhaust and make sure the gaskets and heat plate are not blown. Every one I have taken apart on a 2F have been blown.

Here is a good read that should make you laugh. It is a 2F.

another stupid question...Im about to put this manifold back together...is the heat riser insulator that is sandwiched between the two manifolds necessary???? mine is shot and a new one is 30 or 40 bux. i have the Fel-Pro kit that came with the other two gaskets that go there. also the (flapper)???valve or whatever you call it in the exhaust manifold is sticky. can i take that thing out???

i am willing to buy new ones if they are necessary to keep my rig running right. just wondering?
