I have three vacuum pumps that are going to scrap shortly. It never occured to me that a MUDer could use them. Two of them are attached to chamber tables used for taking bubbles out of plaster used in lost-wax jewelry casting. The third is larger and used for siphoning into beakers. All free for local pickup, but only thru month's end.

I wish I was in SoCal I would take one in a heartbeat. What brand are they and I will start looking locally. Luckily I think ant is going to be able to work the bubbles out.
Thanks

I will try and look when I go back to the warehouse next Tuesday.

Alright so here is my final iteration 3rd on the right. Im very happy with the results. I can't get all the little tiny bubbles out without a vacuum chamber but you can't see them unless your face is two inches from the piece. The final piece is wet sanded, cut, and buffed and it is the correct color and looks great! I will continue to make these until i run out of resin or my mold breaks so probably around 10. Please PM me if you need one.

Amazing work, sir!

:cheers:

I used to use some kind of shaker table to de-bubble plaster for lost wax casting. would that also work for the resin?

<edit - beat me to it...>

unfortunately with the fast curing time of the resin... vibration only does so much. that's how I made the first batch with very few bubbles but it was a slower curing resin and never truely hardened

I'll also add a too bad I'm not local :(

I bought a cheap no name pump off amazon. I also hope to get into jewelry casting with wax... my next big project is going to be building a kiln

I gave away an electric kiln just before Thanksgiving. I have a larger gas-fired one still to get rid of. Unfortunately, the burners for it are already gone, accidentally tossed shortly after my father passed 17 years ago. More legacies of the warehouse.

I have done this type of casting extensively at my work. To remove the bubbles you will find that a small pressure pot will do the trick, but a vacuum chamber will only exacerbate the issue. 1 gal or so pressure tanks are inexpensive. Pressurize to 80-100 psi and let cure in the tank.

Interesting. It's counter-intuitive. But the fact that we have several people to even weigh in on this is cool. Like when that guy decided to repop the tool rolls, and all of a sudden we found out there were a dozen guys with heavy duty sewing machines.

Thanks, my wife says I'm an old tool hoarder. Oh well she's stuck w/ me.

a pressure tank won't remove the bubbles that are formed from mixing. I won't be leaving the casting in the chamber under vacuum. as I know all too well flying in a low pressure environment . .. gas expands in a near vacuum. I just need to clear the resin before pouring. if I have to make a pressurized pot later I will but I will need to make a silicone mold under that same pressure so it doesn't get distorted.

what you're doing is super cool. you ever thought about using a Mityvac or some other hand pump to create negative pressure?
hope it goes well, ty
