Makin' Brake Lines

I've used Fedhill's flare tool on my '32 Ford build and I've never seen anything do the double flare as easily or as well as this. I'm going to have to redo some of Custom Tube's (bent wrong) lines to finish my FJ40 project. It's rather steep and just looked and found they're out of stock but just use this as a bench standard to compare with. http://store.fedhillusa.com/007bbrakelineflaringtool.aspx

I'm useing FJ60 axles and have elimitated the backing plates. Flex line screws right into caliper, I believe no copper washer.

On my master cylinder, I don't have the pressure vaule at the cylinder, so no washers there, either.

I think mine setup is alright, if not please set me straight.

My minds working better today Ron and I've remembered that I have a copper washer at one end of EVERY flexible hose on my 1979. So I've ammended my earlier post to show where the other two washers are. (I had a feeling I was missing some when I made that post earlier.)

Banjo fittings have the washers if I remember correctly

I don't think my 79 has any banjos in it's brake system. But of course there are many different braking systems. (My 79 doesn't have a proportioning valve for instance and disc callipers have different fittings to drum backing plates.)

Since I'll be going through this soon - would anyone happen to have a size, part number, etc. for the copper washers? I'll most likely need to replace mine. May be easier to source locally, if it is a common size.

I think they come with the new OEM hoses ... but it's been a while since I've replaced any of these hoses..

I just bought the size I needed from Autozone, but had to buy a multi pack of different sizes to get the right one. Cost just shy of 5 bucks.

PS. Thinking back ... I may have reused the original washers.

(I do have a "boxed copper washer kit" but despite the wide variation of sizes within it, I seldom seem to find washers there that have both the ideal INTERNAL diameter and the ideal EXTERNAL diameter. So it is quite common for me to re-use an old washer rather than use a new one from the kit .)

I bought Poser's rear disc brake system and am headed to Phoenix to install it on my sons 74FJ40. I know you guys have figured out what flare tool is affordable and works the best. I really didnt want to spend 300 bucks on a flare tool but I wanted something thats easy to use. What would work best, affordable and where to get it? I also want to know where the best Place is to get the brake line and fittings. I am wanting a brake line that is easy to bend with a hand held bender. What should I use and where should I get it? What size do I need to buy. Last I need to buy a hand held bending tool where is the best place to buy one that is affordable and easy to use?

I used this fix on my M101A2 Mil trailer to fix leaking Tee--worked like a charm!

As you can see, I have drums all around. But surely they must use a similar copper washer there where the flexible meets the disc calliper if you've got discs up front?

Right at the moment I can't think of where there are any more copper washers but my mind's a bit fogged up... LOL.

Edit: My mind's working better today .... At one end of every flexible brake hose on my 1979 a copper sealing washer is used. So that means there are two more in these locations (where my front and rear flexible hoses attach to the fittings on my diff casings):

I just completed my 69 FJ40 which had the old 9mm fittings. I used 3/16 steel line and had 24+ adaptor fittings to go from 9mm to 3/8. Some new components were bubble flare, and some were double flare. I did everything with a kit like Vae recommended. The 25' rolls of tubing sold at Advance, Autozone, etc. is an easily bent tubing so only on tight 90s or more require any bender.

Are you still planning on going with Nickel-Copper brake lines? I'm thinking about going this direction. Originally I was just going to buy the pre-formed ones from SOR - but I got a flaring tool for Christmas (just the cheap OTC tool) and figured I would try my hand at making the replacement lines.

A friend of mine used NiCopp on his Truggy, and he said it was fairly easy to bend and flare.
 
I wonder if Napa has the nickel copper tubing?
What diameter of tubing do I need to get so
I can use the 10mm fittings the 74 FJ40 has?

I was just looking at this tonight - I believe 3/16" tubing is what you need. (~4.75mm). NAPA should have it, although it is much cheaper online.
 
Ok I am finally understanding what I need. Fine thread fittings 3/16 x 10mm x 1.0 some male and some female. Napa is cheaper on the copper nickel 25 ft rolls at $2.29 a foot. The male 10mm x 1.0 male fittings at napa are 69 cents. The tubing at Fedhill is 59.95 plus shipping comes to 72 bucks and the male fittings are 1.10 plus shipping. So the tubing and the flare nuts I'll get at my local Napa and save some money. The Fedhill female unions are 7.50 and 8.50 at Napa. If I use female to male flare nuts on my long runs I shouldn't need any unions. Napa doesn't have the rock guard and Summit does. So the rock guard I will get from summit. Do I need 3/16 or 1/4 rock guard for the 3/16 Nickel Copper tubing? Once I learn this then Im ready to order most of my stuff from my Napa dealer and save a few dollars to spend on beer. Besides I have an account with Napa and I like to keep my money local if possible. Just need help with the size of rock guard?
