I figured since I was building this sucka I should have a cohesive thread to follow the progress.

I will recap a couple of things.....

To this point, I had wired new lights, installed a "3rd" wheel and added 2.5" spacers from wheeladapter.com to be able to run 100 series wheels on the trailer.

Today, I cut and installed the top. I have a 72" stainless steel hinge on one side that will allow the the top to open coffin style or 180* to use it as a table.

I have (2) 150# struts for the top to use to prop it up when I am using it.

I have to shim the top and do the final install tomorrow and will get pics.

All right a trailer builder with a style idea. If you plan on using the parking leg, be careful with the little wheel, rocks dont like it. The hinge 2 inch at least? onward and upward, have fun. keep the pix rollin in. Jim.

All right a trailer builder with a style idea. Rather than the spacers could you have the wheel hubs punched and reinstall the bolt pattern for the cruiser? I went from 5 51/2 to 6 on 5 1/2 and it worked well. Really curious about the top, this I have to see, I did a similar style but it had too much shift under load. have fun...Jim

The wheel is for the shop. When I get to the camping spot, I plan on parking it.

As for the hinge, it is 1 3/4. It is a little small, but the material I used dictated the size of the hinge. A little rough for my taste, but it will work fine.

Nolen-

I am excited to see your progress, thanks for sharing this stuff with us man. I look forward to seeing your top design. Are you going to mount your Car Top Tent on the lid or keep it up on your cruiser?

Any OTB plans for your 101?

Yesterday was a good day.

I mounted the roof. It is made of 1/2" thick plastic. The slick kind that is used for cutting boards.

I had a sheet of it already for skidplate material, so I used it.

It turns out that it is stiff enough to stand on, but the 150# gas struts bow it up when I close the top.

I am going to install a permanent roof rack and some angle iron under the rack to stiffen it up.

I got all the parts from www.allegiescorp.com

Desertdude hooked me up with part numbers for the shocks, 72" long stainless steel hinge and all the realated pieces.

I also have a single hangle slam latch to install.

My only regret is not getting a pre-drilled hinge with holes already in it. I ordered it that way, but it came like this. If you are making a metal top, no holes would be best if you are welding it.

Pics later today, off to church.

That looks sweet man! Are you planning on weatherstripping the lid? Just curious, but how much does that plastic weigh compared to plywood?

Looking good man.

Plastic is heavier than plywood and not as stiff. It is just bulletproof.

I am going to have to make a "frame" out of angle-iron on the inside and flat-stock on the top to keep the plastic from bowing up.

It is still going to be a more permanant top than plywood, thicker and more HD than aluminum and within my skill level (steel tops take better fab skills than I have)

I am going to WX strip around the top of the tub.

Nice, I like the idea of a plastic lid! How thick is the sheet?

Looking good! - the plastic lid is a very clever idea ;)

I found some very nice weather srtipping ( to seal the lid) at the local Ace hardeware store

Where did you get the plastic sheet from? I'm looking to build a full lenght belly plate from my FJ40. I have a trailer similar to yours. I never thought about modifying it the way you did but now I'm thinking about it.

www.mcmaster.com should have the UHMW or similar products you're looking for.

I got the hardware installed for the slam latch this weekend. I got the idea from DesertDude and although it is a slick setup and it seems to work great on his trailer, the fact that the plastic is more flexy than his steel roof (even with reinforcements), I just cannot get the latches adjusted for a smooth pull.

I dicked around with it for about 2 hours yesterday and with the same adjustment, one time it woud open flawlessly, and the next time I would have to force it open.

All I can see is me getting to a campsite and not being able to unlock the trailer. That would be a bitch.

Since I had to cut the hole for the latch, it will stay but I will end up using something else for the actual lock.

Anyone have pics of what they used? I am thinking of an old school gate lock with a padlock to be honest.
