i have been reading this post since it started and i cant help wonder, what happened to making them locally??

i dont know how many of you are just wanting a 416 clone or what,, but if a guy could make a basic box trailer, customizable somewhat in box size, tongue length, SOA/SUA and hitch style for about $800 ea. ,, would that be feasable??
I have a guy local to me who builds M416 clones and who will customize them to match to the buyer's needs. Starting price for the basic M416 clone is around $1400 and that's without wheels and tires.

So are you saying there is trailers available right now? FutureLog. told me they had none.

I'm in by the way. And if we need more Arizona buyers just give me the word and I will post a msg to a local club I belong to which should put us at whatever number is needed.

According to Steve, they had enough trailers for one truck load in Ontario. I think they initially wanted to find closer trailers, but they couldn't find any closer-- and the shipping from Ontario was still workable.

Good deal.

i am not intersted in a 416 clone, plus the 416 styled box is expensive to produce, i know of a bunch of 500 gal. surplus water tanks, about the size of a 416 but a box, if one were to buy some at $100 ea, then split them you get two good trailer beds. put them on top of about $400 worth of square steel tube, axle, springs ect and you can produce a basic box trailer for under $800 turning a profit, but you guys dont want to here about that.

Rhino, I would be interested in your idea but only if this group buy falls through.

I don't want to forfeit a genuine chance to pick up an M416/M101 ... especially at this price.

dimensions on the tanks?

Sorry to butt in on your conversation, guys, but I'm always dreaming of returning to AZ and check this forum sometimes....wish I could join you at the Cruiser Cruise! :(

If I can make a suggestion, I think BMAN is on the right track designing a custom trailer. I've put about 8 years and more money than I care to admit to fixing/modifying my M416 for offroad camping, and if I had to do it again, I would *definitely* build from scratch. There are too many downsides to the M416, from the length of the tongue to the dimensions of the tub, lack of tailgate, and axle mismatch. By the time you get to correcting all those things, you're already down the fabrication road, why not use the initial cash outlay to build something that suits your needs and matches your Land Cruiser? Just a thought.

The Canadian M101's are very nicely made, I had a chance to check one out at, of all places, the Military Vehicle Meet at Papago Park a few years back. Heavier duty than a US-spec M416, stronger components, but IMHO, the same limitations listed above. Sure, the idea that your trailer was designed to float is cool, but realistically, do you want the trailer to start doing so during a river crossing, swing around with the current and smash into the body (and with the short tongue, it *will*, my Cruiser used to have the dents to prove it)?

If you can pick one up cheap, then go with the M416/M101. But once the price starts to climb, and you balance out the cost of fabrication, you might be better off building. I paid $295 for my M416 eight years ago and if I had designed the trailer and built it from scratch, *once*, I'd be way under the current cost.

BTW, I'm probably still *persona non grata* in Glendale, I sanded, prepped AND painted my M416 project in the parking lot of my apartment building complex off of Thunderbird and 52nd! Not one of my finest moments....

so, do we have anything definitive?

Well, right now we still need a few more buyers. We are short at least 3, and maybe short as many as six. I will try and contact Steve and find out if his waverying buyers had made up their mind.

Lars-- you said you had some other guys that might be interested--since we are still short why don't you see if any are interested.

I'll do it.

Funny you should say this, if you do a search on the LCML I am sure that you find where you and I once had this very same discussion-- the pros and cons of building from scratch or modifying a military trailer. As I recall, I was suprised to see that thought that building from scratch was the way to go-- given that your military trailer conversion turned out so nice.

Also, I seem to recall that at one time you offered Junior up for sale--- at the time I remember thinking the price seemed high, but it does not seem that way anymore.

whoa!!! hang on ther PAL!!! i am the one that insisted building from scracth since the beginning, :-) LOL,.
BMAN was seeing it clear at first, then he went to dreamland but now hes back,,, the others are still thinking they can polish a turd cheaply, personnaly i wouldnt spend more than $500 on one of these because if you cant do the fab work yourself you will spend AT LEAST $300 on tongue and hub upgrades alone. now your at $1100 right off the bat, i am not taking into account larger tires/rims/lights ect. cause that will all have to be done to a custom also.

i am not bashing you guys, i can see that for about $800 you can get a good useable trailer and slowly over time remodel it. i also understand that not not everyone has my situation of making there own from scratch. but as has been pointed out you will spend more in the long run just to "have it now".

i think the 416 style trailer is a good buy at $800 if you are happy with it AS IS. even though exiled has not disclosed his money and time spent, i am sure he could have bought one of the custom build 416 style trailer with cash leftover for that new paint job for princess. am i close??

Aw come on in Phil jump in the water is fine... :)
I am a buyer and find this very confusing, even after going to the link from trailers post above. Sorry, but I dont feel 750.00 per unit on a group buy is a deal.

...Waiting for some concrete details

This is like herding cats ;)

I talked with Steve on Friday. He said he talked with Future Logisitics recently. They had got some quotes on shipping the trailers from Ontario, but they were really high. It would end up costing more like 1000 dollars a trailer if we had to pay those rates. They were going to keep looking, but it could turn out to be a problem.

If they can't find better shipping we may end up having to wait until they get more trailers in the western part of canada.

We also talked about the fact that we are still coming up short on buyers. If we don't get more we may have to tap into other sources--- and that may result in the receiving location being moved back to Las Vegas-- a more central location to some of these other buyers. BTW, Lars did you find any more buyers for us?

I still have not found a good receiving location here in the Valley-- any ideas guys?

Finally-- here is a canadian trailer that was on ebay--- it did not make the reserve. Apparantly these guys ask for around 1500 a trailer
