Who did you go with? Or still shopping?
With AAA, we bundle our home, roadside, etc. all into one.
I had to go allstate. My homeowners insurance company cancelled the entire region for wild fire threat so I was shopping for homeowners. They were my best price by far but it required auto. I was shocked when they quoted me about half what USAA was charging so I was happy to switch. I knew my rates were high but I had read EVs were more so I hadn't really questioned it too much.

It's been hard getting home insurance for my Father-in-laws home as it's near a fire area AND in CA, where insurance companies are bugging out.

That will probably be happening in more-and-more states. The Gulf Coast is certainly next due to hurricanes. Also, we should all look forward to 100-year floodplain boundaries expanding a LOT from what they are right now, and folks either being affected by a flood and not having flood insurance, or having to get it due to mortgage requirements.

While this process will have the effect of no longer subsidizing carefree development in less-than-ideal places (i.e., quite a bit of development in the USA since the 1950s), it'll really put a lot of people in a bad spot due to having uninsurable property with values that drop off a cliff.

Also, with extreme rain events becoming more prevalent, anywhere can flood. You don't have to be ina flood plain. We got over 6 inches of rain in 2 hours in 2019 and it was chaos.

Ha-ha! I'd be more worried about tsunami/title wave than flooding from rain!
Actually we're on a bluff about 50' above sea level, so even that wouldn't/shouldn't affect us. If it does, I thing we ALL would be having a LOT more to worry about.

Yea... we were fine from the flood but didn't have a check valve so sewer back up. The house had a French drain so that kept us from having feet and only inches. Ironically it was the only house on our part of the street with a French drain and it was a rental.

So make sure you have both of those, a French drain and a sewer check valve.

Iowa's dynamic weather has become a little psychotic at times. That big ass F5 tornado was only 30 miles from one of my sites.

And where are you moving to, again? Hopefully better climate and weather conditions.

Loveland, Colorado, it hasn't actually sunk in, yet. I have been so focused and stressed about the move, I have not had much thought left for all the fun and panel damage that awaits... 😅

My arthritis has gotten a lot worse the last few years so it should help with that.

Don't worry, the Big Thompson never floods.

Hold on, I'm getting a message from my producer...

Nevermind. 🙄

More crazy rain in the east, plus that AND droughts in the west!

Our new place, when finished, is 250' above the floodplain with a concrete storm bunker under the front porch. With our own water well and septic, provisions for a PTO generator powered by my diesel tractor and a wood burning fireplace with lots of stockpiled firewood for backup heat. Oh, and a series of French drains, too. So surviving an extreme weather event should be no problem :).

That's kinda where I am headed for our cabin. I still want to get a townhouse, first though.

Did I mention I love living in the PNW now? I'll take dealing with (and putting out as a firefighter) fires and the occasional multi foot snow dump than live anywhere south and or southwest of here. Should of left Texas a couple decades ago.

The PNW is pretty sweet.

I did enjoy my 2 years in Austin but was quite glad to cross the state line on my way home.

The Ozarks can provide everything one needs to live off the land, with a long growing season and limited natural disasters, plus generally kind and helpful people. It's the reason my family relocated to this region over 40 years ago, and I stuck around to raise my family here too.

I've always thought that a propane generator with a "xx" size tank sitting on the side of the house would make a great ancillary power supply if the hard line power ever went out. What I like about the propane, it will never go bad, unlike liquid fuel that one needs to cycle through or it separate. Propane can sit around for years. It can also be used for the water heater, stove/oven, home heating etc. Just have a big 'ol tank good for 3 - 6 months of fuel, sitting somewhere nearby and you're good for an apocalypse!

We're well on our way to establishing a Toyota cult :)
