The LX570 air cleaner has another screen and filter upstream of the replaceable paper filter, (directly after, in the square upper housing) which is made into the air cleaner assembly, and appears to be riveted in.

I assume that this is not a replaceable item or is it?

Has anyone removed this?

Seems like an excellent protection for the engine, but could be hampering air flow?

IF THERE IS A THREAD ON THIS ALREADY, please let me know, I looked and found nothing, but I suck at searching. Thanks

It is an actual air filter or is it a screen? I cant imagine an air filter that is not replaceable.

The hydrocarbon (HC) filter is a component in your intake that helps reduce harmful emissions. It works by capturing and storing fuel vapors that can accumulate in the intake when it's turned off. These vapors can contribute to air pollution.

When you start your engine, the HC filter releases these stored vapors into the engine, where they are burned along with the fuel. This helps prevent the vapors from escaping into the atmosphere.

Thanks, I did not know about this filter. Does it ever need to be replaced or is it permanent.

It never needs to be replaced - it is permanently installed.

Is there a part number for this filter and what does it look like?

There is no part number, it is not a replaceable part - it comes permanently attached to the top half of the air box.

It has activated carbon sandwiched into the layers. It may also help to reduce turbulence inside the air box...

Interesting about turbulence. Is that advertised as such? Usually, air in the box will be turbulent, but as soon as it enters piping, velocity increases, diameter reduces and turbulence will not be a matter. I can't imagine that a filter would be used for this. Air passing a maf has to be laminar by design. Not saying the filter isnt doing this, but it would be abnormal. If it is, interesting.

This is it. I don't think it matters much. I did read about the air filtration system for these vehicles and learned that there seems to be leakage around the filter, so this screen is a good backup to that, or so it seems. I'll keep mine in

Yes that is it.

I wonder if the leaking thing is true.....if it is......I further wonder if that pice is replaceable or cleanable.

As others have said, it is definitely riveted in. I am guessing you have to vacuum it out when you want to clean it. Funny thing is, I think only the Lexus comes with it. I looked at some Tundra boxes and they don't have it. But again, this could be after a certain year.

My 2013 Landcruiser has one and I’m pretty sure all US market 200-series did as well.

It is not intended to be changed, the rivets and lack of a separate part number make that clear.

And yes our airboxes are prone to fine dust bypassing the primary filter. I have seen evidence of this on my rig and it’s a well-known issue on the 1VD variants leading to turbo and piston ring issues. They seem to get it worse than the US rigs.. could be differences in the air box design.

Because of this I run K&N filter grease on the flange of my air filter and haven’t had the issue come up since.

I’d personally be shocked if Toyota intended the carbon filter to handle particulates, as that would be admitting their airbox design may be flawed.

Also the bit about reducing turbulence was my speculation, based on that method being used in other places. Thinking through it further it won’t do anything for that job that the primary air filter didn’t already do.
