Just returned from my second trip pulling the 3500 lb camper. 7 Miles per gallon average. I'm getting about 150 miles per tank! Vehicle has been completely tuned up, just checking if this is just "the way it is"...... My 4100 mile trip this summer cost me $$$$$$$

On another note, the exhaust is especially strong when I crank her up.... Anything I can look for?

Thanks

Ouch! I'm of no help other than to ask if you've made modifications such as lift/tires, etc?

what do you mean by strong? loud?

Seems a bit excessive to me unless you are pulling that at like 80mph+ or climbing some steep grades, and I mean STEEP grades. Interested to see what others come up with.

Doesn't seem right to me. Our camper loaded up probably comes in just under 4k. With a lot of hills, I may hit 9mpg, but 10-11mpg seems to be average mostly.

Unless you're pulling uphill the entire way, that number sounds really bad esp with such a light load. Smelling exhaust gas on startup means you have a manifold leak, which is common these vehicles.

High mileage? Worn out injectors?

What do you mean by "completely tuned up"?

With the exhaust "strong" do you mean smelling or loud?

If it smells strong...like un-burnt fuel, then you may be running rich. Any CEL's? If you have Techstream or access to it, you might want to look at the data to see if it gives you any clues.

I get 7 mpg towing my 4500lb(fully loaded)travel trailer. I have a 4-speed with 34s and 4.88s. I tow at 65mph and 3200 rpms.

I was getting 9mpg on my 2007 LX and that was empty or hauling one motorcycle. Long story short.... had to change a leaky radiator and did my timing belt / fuel pump when doing that. The Timing belt looked like it had never been changed (170,000 miles and actually broke when I was turning engine to timing marks to change it) so I did the plugs, fuel filter, injector cleaner, new K&N air filter etc. and am now getting a solid 14mpg when empty.
So all that is to say... hauling that much weight on these things.... 7mpg sounds about right sadly. Wish they would have given us the diesel option that other countries got. I get about 26mpg in my BJ74 and around 20 to 25 in my HZJ75.

Looks like you dodged a major bullet there! That is the worst belt I have ever seen!

I got 5.5mpg driving into strong headwinds from western Kansas to Denver then up to Cheyenne hauling about 4000lbs in a trailer. WAS MISERABLE.

Just part of the experience 🤣

YIKES.....you caught that in the nick of time!!! no pun intended

my lx470 is an 07 and it also gets crappy mileage. Im wondering if my coils might be bad. Truck has 300k miles on it, and no known coil replacement. I swapped the spark plugs at 260k, and the coils looked ok to the naked eye. I too have a strong exhaust smell at times...

Besides the crap mileage and small fuel tank, I love everything about this truck. Simply amazing vehicles.

Too bad you weren't headed the other direction, you might have gotten 22mpg. ;)

Stated mileage is 13-17mpg's on these beasts correct? Always love seeing those numbers and then people arguing why they can't seem to get them with their vehicles. If you keep it slow and steady on flat ground I am sure you could get the "Highway" mileage number if you really tried, I have gotten close with our 2011 4Runner, but never actually attained the fabled 23mpg Highway that it states. Gotten 20mpg before on pretty much flat ground keeping it right around 70mpg on the freeway.

Fully expect that when I get my 100 in the future to get somewhere in the mid-teens (13-15 mpg) which will be much better than my current average of 10-11mpg (unless the entire tank is on the freeway then I can get 14-ish mpg) of my 60.
