Hi everyone. I have a 1996 LX450 and it is having front axle problems. I have tried to repair the broken seals. This is one of the invoices attached. Does anyone know of a good mechanic in the NYC area that has knowledge of Toyota axles besides Lexus Corp.???
I was driving on the Saw Mill last night when I detected a grinding noise similar to what I heard before the repair, only not as loud.

Really would appreciate your help...

Are you leaking "birf soup" (indicates inner axle shaft seal worn) - or are you just getting a grinding noise in general?

-Checked your diff fluid level?

-Any possibility you been out rough-housing & bent the axle shell? (I've done that one, and I'm generally mild mannered I think.)

If you bent the shell, it would show up as lots of metal shavings in the fluid if you drain it, as when I bent my shell I did it on the RH side & it ground up the inner driveshaft & diff splined cuff it mates to, so it left all the shavings in the bottom of the diff housing.

If you decide to drain your fluid, make sure you have your fill plug removed/loosened so you don't end up in the mess many have posted threads over - use a 6 point socket from the get-go, 22mm IIRC off the top of my head.

I bet it's the birfield. there is grease on the case... again. I don't know how to do the work. I would destroy the truck. I don't do any off-roading anymore but I do put a lot of miles on it (320 today). I don't think anything is bent, I just think the seals are deteriorating. The truck has spent its life in ny and all of the snow and salt has probably really corroded everything. It is just I thought I paid to have this fixed and it worked for a 1000 miles but the problem has returned.

I'd take it back to the same shop and tell them to figure out what they did wrong.:meh:

I second that... you didn't pay them for it to be fixed for a 1k miles then leak. Bet they damaged the seal installing it that's why its leaking still. Id take it back to them. I won't take my car to any of the toy dealerships in town and my wife works at one too...

I agree - and open a dispute with your credit card company until it's fixed

Looks like you have a bad axle seal from you picture.

The grinding could be any number of things. You'll only know what by open ing it up.

Take it back to them to repair it correctly.

That looks alot like "birf soup" - and it looks like according to your receipt they charged you for replacement inner seal - so either they did it & screwed up (tore it, abused in general) the seal reinstalling the inner driveshaft, or it didn't get swapped as billed for.

At least that what i see based on all the slinging on the inner tire sidewall, and the hub area.

I'd do as others recommend & take it back & open a dispute with your CC company in the interim.

I'd pay the few bux & pressure wash that whole side & see how fast it looks like that again - that will speak volumes as to what & how bad the situation is - also check the diff fluid(6 point socket only) - if it's not at the rim of the fill hole, yu're running on the low side.
