Fellas-
Hello and thanks for your time. I have 201K on my LX450!! I am trying to decide whether to upgrade the vehicle or start restoring slowly.
I am having 02 sensors replaced and power-steering pump and an oil leak fixed this week. But, in addition to that I would like to replace the broken radio. I have almost settled on a http://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-AVH-P...Z63A/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1334756000&sr=8-1 and it has preamps etc. Has anyone tried this radio? It is double din, but not sure how it fits. Also, I am at a loss as to what speakers will fit and is that a subwoofer in the center console? I see 4 speakers in the doors, but read here that there are also speakers in the dash that one of the posters just disconnected, which I am fine with doing. I really want 4 good speakers that fit and a small subwoofer that will fit.
Please let me know any advice you have for me (us). Thanks for your time in advance! ALSO, anything I learn I will post for the rest of you!

Looks good

It looks like a nice stereo, I hope someone chimes in that has it or tried it. I have a heck of a time trying to figure out what the options are. I have done a bunch of searches, but not convinced I have a good plan so I am still rolling with the stock unit with only FM functioning. I did get a FM frequency connection for my i-phone so I can play from my i-tunes, but that is just more wires and lighter plug ins in my way.
I really am hung up on two things. (1)Double Din doesn't appear to really be a fixed size. Many people report they put in a double din Scion unit, but had to trim the dash a bit, not an option for me, yuk. Also, there is some additional wires that have to be run from the back to add an aux input. I just want a simple input on the face of the deck. (2)I don't want a single din unit because they seem to have gaps around them, the colors don't match, and they look out of place in the space. I don't know how to say it, but they look off in the space/fit/finish/design.

Double DIN is a standard size, but the Scion units that are an OEM stereo may not adhere to the aftermarket's idea of double DIN, hence the need to trim for those units to fit certain dashes.

I used a FLEABAY double din from China with NAV. I have had it for a couple years and it works good. It was a resonable price and has bluetooth for my Iphone.

Thanks guys!
I have a question also about this... How many speakers and what size and where are they??
I see in my console what I thought was a subwoofer, in the dash on passenger (rightside) there looks to be a speaker, then two in the front doors and two in the rear doors.
I am having a heck of a time finding out what size they are and where the subwoofer is actually. I am thinking I will buy 6.5's for the front door and 4 inchers for the back doors but don't know if that will be enough and I would like to buy a subwoofer but don't know what size or where it actually goes! Is there a detail somewhere like a schematic? I din't want to just take it to best buy, I wanted to do it myself as this is my baby!

Exactly what size and where Speakers are located in the 1997

The front door speakers are a hard one. The are extremely shallow 6.5 Inch speakers. The ones I used are 2" deep. The rears are 4.5 if I remember and the sub is 6". I also have a pair of 2" speaker in my dash and some small ones in the rear roof but I never touched them. My radio screen is 7" and I'm really happy with it so far. hope that helps a little.

Big Help! But could you tell me if that is the subwoofer in the center console by the shifter? I see a screen there and it used to rattle while music played soI think that is it. What kind of replacement would be right for that one? Thanks@

I'm pretty sure on the LX it's in the consule. Mine was in the back and when you install an aftermarket radio the factory amp has to go so the sub is kind useless. IMO i would get a 6" or 8" sub and an aftermarket amp. Thats what I did to mine ran a small Alpine amp and a 8 Inch sub in the stock location. Works great.

I upgraded the facotory LX sub in mine and put the Polk audio speakers in the doors (search for them lots of info). The Polk's totally make the LX sub even my upgrade useless, I have now taken mine out and installed a LC console for the added storage space.

X2 on this if you get a good set of componet speakers the Sub is kind of useless item.

Just put a pioneer avh 4400 into 95fj80; replaced fronts and tweets with 6.5 tsa1604c pioneer combo. Pics

Hi DEADSALT,

I am loking for aftermarket replacements for the OEM speakers in my 97 LX450 and was wondering what brand and spec are the ones shown on the third photo down on your post #13. Thanks and regards,

Yes. With a new head unit the sub in an lx becomes useless. I tried to have a car stereo place hook it up to my new head unit and the wireing would take hours. I am going to make a custom box for the console and install a 8 inch sub with a small 50 to 100 watt amp. This should give me just enough bump without rattling the console.

I have Infinity 6 1/2 speakers in front. They are the shallow mount and work great. I put the pioneer stock replacements in the back. Works great. Sounds great. Only quam, is the shallow mounts lack bass. Sub should take care of that. Overall this will cost me about $400 for the setup. Pretty good, I would say.

Texan - I have just replaced the HU and speakers in my 97 LX450. I used the same Pioneeer HU you are looking at. Fits great. Went ahead and replaced the four door speakers as well. I used Kicker 6 1/2s in front, Memphis Audio 4 1/2s in back. The fronts required cutting a spacer mount to provide enough depth, but was able to use the OEM speaker cover. The rears went in with no problem.

The sub is in the center console between the seats. It is a 4 1/2 pioneer with the tweeter removed. Mine was working fine so we decided not to replace. The front door speakers were trashed with paper missing.

I removed the factory amp and installed an ARC XDI805 5 channel amp in the cubby passenger side by the third row seats. Plenty loud enough for me and sounds great! I now hear parts of songs I never heard before!

As has been said in previous threads, anything you can do to update your stock radio will sound much much better.
