I was on my way to work today and everything was running fine until I turned into the parking garage, when on the ramp the enginge started to sputter. I backed off the throttle a bit and it recovered until I had to accelerate again when it sputtered again. Again I backed off, and then needed to accelerate again it sputtered and died and won't restart.

I don't seem to have a battery issuse as all the electricals on the truck work. I checked the connections on the plugs, they and the wires and dizzy are about a year and a half old. The starter is engaging and turning the engine, but it won't actually run. Starter is about three years old. I also replaced the fuel filter about three years ago.

What could be the problem?

Replaced PCV in September, and did the fuel filter about three years ago. I have been having intermittent P0401 codes. There CEL isn't lit curently though.

I would try fuel filter, once they block up no fuel or limited amount getting to engine, hence why it splutters or wont start. Ya starving it.

We don't have another wiring harness getting cut at the firewall (going into the glovebox), do we?

Have not several of these sputtering deaths been tracked to an injector wire from the ecu shorting out?

I'd search, but I'm at work now and need to bolt.

Every time I’ve had those symptoms, it’s been the fuel filter. Just replaced mine yesterday for a different reason. PITA to replace. The fuel that came out of my old one looked like chocolate milk.

is there a fuel line after the filter that's easy to disconnect and check for flow?

Almost sounds like it's getting to much fuel and flooding the engine, but that doesn't seem likely with a fuel injected motor.

Check the engine wiring harness by the EGR valve.

Check the fuses carefully, including the ones inside the engine compartment. This sounds like the problem that NorCalDoug had in Death Valley. A wire had chafed inside the fuel tank and was grounding out the fuel pump and blowing the 15 amp EFI fuse in the engine bay. Check all the fuses- pull them out and look at the filament carefully and let us know.

I remembered there being an issue with the wiring harness that was behind the glove box. I moved the harness around that comes out of the firewall behind the glove box hoping that if it was just a short it would start or at least turn over. Nothing happened.

I went ahead and had it towed suspecting a fuel pump or filter issue and it's at a dealer with a bonus from the tow truck driver.

I also think it sounds fuel pump related, but a quick check of the dizzy cap is also in order. When I replaced mine a while back I think the little button on top wasn't seated all the way in and when I put it back on all I had was the spring in there. It ran great for about a week, but about 1/2 mile from Gumby's shop it did the same thing as yours did, and then eventually died. It didnt throw any codes (except my chronic P0401). I was a little embarassed when after we towed it to Gumby's shop and pulled the cap and found the button gone. I immediately lost two   on my mechanical abilities for that one.

:)

I'll cast a vote for the fuel pump. Keep us posted.

dieing out when with acceleration and trouble starting but fine at low throttle sounds exactly like the problem I had with my fuel pump relay,

the relay controlls the voltage that the fuel pump revieces, during start and higher throttle positions the pump gets straight 12v, durign normal cruise the fuel pump current is routed through the fuel pumnp reisitor with drops the voltatage to the pump and lowers it output to match conditions,

try tapping the relay, it is located on the drivers inned fender near the windshield washer diverter. that got me going on sevral ocations.

to bad it si already at a shop.

I had a similar issue with my 95 LC. After 4 tows to the shop and a new AAA membership (it started fine each time when off the tow truck) I changed the fuel injection relay. It solved the problem.

The shop left a message saying they had found a break in the wiring harness. They're going to work with it some more in the morning to make sure that was the problem. I was conflicted about having it taken to the shop vs home, but given my schedule this week and the possibility of having to drain the fuel tank I opted for the easiest solution to the worst case scenario. Still it sucks to have had all these additional problems and expense for something I might have solved with some electrical tape.

after posing here I read your other thread. bummer. stay on top of them during these repairs.

Just talked to the guy, and he said that fixing the harness got it running, but it has a miss on one of the cylinders. I'm not going to have them do anything else to it right now.
