LRA 40g Main Tank '05+ Install

Going to get into the sending unit mods today. Appears to be same same.

Also, this would be a pretty clever solution if it could work with the factory gauge.

Sending unit mods are pretty straight forward. Instead of using the fitting and extension on the return line I've elected to replace the entire thing. Besides, I’m not sure how you’d separate the old corrugated plastic line from its fittings without destroying it. 12” of submersible fuel line was $51 at my local NAPA 😳 So I ordered the same thing off Summit for ≈$20 less.

@87warrior If you're able to measure your vertical clearance between the LRA fuel tank and the rear crossmember above it that would be really appreciated. If I have a clearance issue due to my body lift it's going to be right there.

04/05 build date on mine

Searching around prior threads it appears the incompatibility with this tank begins with a build date of May 2005 or later. So, lucky you!

Although strange that the LRA site doesn't have any statement related to this that I can find

I'd verify the official compatibility with the company and/or @GTV

LRA has updated their entire website since then.

I weighed the original tank and skid, roughly 15lbs for the skid with straps and 40lbs for the tank, about 55lbs total. LRA is 120lbs so the gain in hardware will be something around 65lbs, +80lbs of additional fuel and we’re talking around 145lbs full up.

I’ll definitely be cross leveling again.

I'd be happy to measure. Do you happen to have picture of the crossmember of concern? I can't say I remember a crossmember anywhere near the tank, but it has been more than 4 years since I did the install... Off the top of my head the only area the tank was close to any fixed frame was the upper control arm and mount.

Yep, that’s the exact area I’m talking about. Id take a pic but I’m working out of town. As long as there is 1/2” vertical clearance between the frame and tank below it I’ll be good. I really appreciate it!

Interesting, would be nice if it just worked without any additional hassles. I just looked at their site and it says 98-04 but I will reach out to confirm how far into 05 it would work. Im sure theres a way I can look at my current oem setup and determine if it will work or not.

It looks like they are based out of Boise, does anyone know off hand if you can pick up there or does it have to ship?

I picked mine up at their warehouse, like I mentioned they’re about 5 minutes down the road from me. Otherwise you’ll have to have it shipped.

Sorry about the terrible pictures, but its tight in that area! I also discovered I have some rust mitigation to do.

I think this is the money shot of your request. I am not sure how much the body moves in the body mounts in this area, but I think you should be in the clear with a 1/2" BL.

Here are a couple of other clearance shots.

It appears as if I'll be in the clear! Massive thanks, that's a big relief!

Hopefully I'll be able to get an extra inch of BL in there but that's future GTV's problem 😀

Next problem, connecting the fast fill vent hose.

LRA supplied brass 1/4" NPT x 5/8” barbed fitting vs original tank vent. Again with the S.A.E… 🙄 On a serious note, the factory vent is about 15mm I.D. and the new one chokes it down to 1/4” (6.35mm). I hope that bottleneck doesn't pose a problem.

The ideal solution would be a 5/8” fitting with a vent outlet like factory (red C clip locks in behind the raised ring). Does anything like that exist? It’s about 19mm OD with a 22.5mm OD retaining ring. I’m hoping to avoid changing out the entire hose. Any ideas?

I gave up finding a fitting that would suit the factory hose pretty quickly.
Welding/machining isn't an option, I'm trying to find a simple, effective yet professional off-the-shelf solution first.
So a new hose it is.
The other end connects to the EVAP canister and is, like the original tank vent, 19mm (3/4").
So I just need a 1/4" NPT x 3/4" barbed fitting... which apparently doesn't exist.
Or use the supplied 5/8" fitting, a short section of 5/8" hose to a 5/8" to 3/4" barbed adapter and run 3/4" the rest of the way to the canister.

Not elegant but I suppose it would work.
Wacking the vent off my stock tank and welding it to the LRA is sounding very appealing.

The vent hose in question, unclipped:

There is no modifying the original corrugated plastic vent hose.

The I.D. of the hose is about 17mm and it's roughly 4' long.
