LRA 40g Main Tank '05+ Install

The check engine lights are still on, I do get a whiff of fuel every now and then and I noticed some spillage this morning at camp. I was driving up some steep/rocky switchbacks yesterday evening with 3/4 tank. The LRA tank doesn’t have the one way flapper valve that the OEM tank has in the fill port, fuel can make its way back up and out the filler if you’re too full/ driving too steep. Just another reason why the factory fill/vent should be retained. It’s still driving perfectly though, currently in Pagosa Springs.

I really love the concept of this, but I can't get past how low it hangs beyond the frame rails. Maybe you've addressed this already, but do you feel the bottom surface material is thick enough that it can act as its own skid, so to speak? Having driven around on a concave- bottom tank for 2 years, I'm hyper considerate of it now.

Maybe an aux tank in spare tire well is what I should consider.

The tank is thick steel and is designed to be its own skid plate. Depends on how you use your rig but I’ve seen pics of 80’s balanced on their tanks without causing real damage. My 1/2” body lift helps tuck the tank up that much higher, it doesn’t look to low to my eyes but then again I don’t “wheel” my rig like it seems you do. Without the body lift the tank hangs down roughly as much as the OEM muffler does. An aux tank will double your fuel capacity at the same cost but the installation is more complex.

Aux tank in spare tire area is something I've thought about as well, does this exist? I don't even need it to be integrated back to my main tank, would just be nice to have extra fuel stored up in that area that I could suck out if needed, instead of taking up space on my swingouts.
 
I gotta post some pics of my LRA tank soon. It has taken hit after hit without complaining. It has concaved in a bit so it might be a 39.5 G tank now!

LRA offers aux tanks for the 100 series, I’ve also seen fuel storage tanks that mount to the OEM spare tire winch.
 
I’m drooling over that fuel range. Ugh.

I'm happy to report that the road trip was [mostly] a success! Outside of the occasional fuel smell and check engine lights the truck did great for 2,451 miles. I'm confident that both of those issues can be solved by using the OEM fill/vent section.

I filled up 6 times (arrived home with over 1/2 tank)
Best mileage was 15.1 (equates to a 604 mile range)
Worst mileage was 13.0 (between Boise and SLC, both ways. 80mph limit eats fuel. Still equals 520 miles to a tank!)
Furthest traveled on a tank was 533.7 miles (Santa Fe to Moab)

It's changed the way I drive the rig. The range was so poor before that I was driving extremely gently to try and eek out as much range as I possibly could. Now, if the speed limit is 80, I don't hesitate to go 80. If I need to pass a semi going up hill against a head wind, I don't think twice about it. Pedal to the metal, I've got range to spare. It's actually way more fun to drive now that I use the entire RPM range 😂 And I never get stuck needing fuel in some backwoods town that charges $1-2 a gallon more. It's just so damn easy and worry free.

It is possible the fuel smell you had was the normal high elevation vapor pressure issue that plagues most 100s.

Good to hear you are loving the tank. I always say the 40 gallon tank was the best thing I did to my 100 and will be the first thing I do if I ever get another 100 for any reason.
