Hello everyone.
I have LJ70 axles and LJ70 gearbox connected to t-case (aluminium one) mounted in my car. I put 35" tires and the engine is accelerates slowly at 4th gear and does not at all at 5th gear. I've already decided to get turbo, but anyway when I'm going 60mph I have 2300 RMP-It's way to fast. Do you know where can I get some lower gears?
 
Mark's 4WD adapters in Australia... for the Transfer Case, at least. Diff gears - does yours have the 8" gears? Then you can just get mini-truck diff gears.

thanks a lot. I found thishttp://www.marks4wd.com/products/gearmaster/lc-extra-low-tc-gears.htm and option 4 seemce to be the best. The only problem is that I like my low range and the only problem is high range. And the price :eek: - any cheaper ideas?
 
I'd supposed it's all about priorities... you spend a pile of $$ on tires and other modifications but you are reluctant to spend money on your gearing.

There are a few options only, and none of them are really all that inexpensive - you can re-gear your axles, switch to a smaller tire, or re-gear your transfer case.

Take your pick...

Lowering gears in T-case is pointless cause when I switch to low gears it's already ok. All T-case kits are lowering low gears when hi stays the same or are just a bit changed. Paying over 2000$ for this mod is a lot - for this price I can install turbo to my engine which is better solution. I'd prefer lowering gears in axles but have no idea where can i get them.
 
There are lots of options for lower diff gears, the light duty Cruisers use the same diffs as the Hilux (typically) and you can fit those gears accordingly.

The only problem with going with lower diff gears is that the parts and installation costs are going to be quite high unless you can find fully assembled units and can do the work yourself.

Not exactly. The front diffs are high pinion, unlike mini truck.

1) How to improve acceleration in 4th and 5th gear;

2) How to drop the RPMs at highway speeds.

"Sloid," honestly, this is a compromise. Lower ("deeper") axle gears improve acceleration but also lead to higher RPMs at higher speeds.

So, the factory compromises with "adequate" acceleration and "not too high" high speed RPMs.

Those 35 inch tires are much heavier, and give much more rolling resistance than the little 29 inch tires that Toyota put on the rig. You need to swap in lower axle gears to help offset that increased weight and rolling resistance.

My buddies '89 LJ73 came with 4.90 ratio axle gears with the little 2.4L 2LT-E engine. It ran O.K. with 31 inch BF Goodrich ATs. Install a set of 30 inch Super Swamper SX bias-ply tires (which are very aggressive, and weigh a ton!) and the lack of horsepower from the 'lil engine is very obvious!

Yes necessarily. the low pinion front would be the 9.5" leaf sprung hd 70 models, BJ70 Hzj7x etc.

Not necessarily... depends on the vintage.

Hey Sloid. Look under your hood at the metal decal plate on the fire wall and look under Trans/Axle and see if it is a G144. The G144 is the axle code for 4.88 gear ratio. If your truck came with the G144 gears the cost to re gear it to 5.29 gears (which is the next set up) will be very high. In my opinion re gearing would be the way to go. Ringpinon.biz should be able to fill you in on the details, if not PM me.

If you have FACTORY 4.88, the offset is different in the 3rd member housing, so you will need to change the 3rd member housings. Attached is an image showing the difference. Its really no big deal, but you'll have a few hundred $ extra cost for the housings if you have factory 4.88.

Yeah, my bad, not thinking of the coils/high pinions... I mostly work on heavy duty Land Cruisers.

Hi everyone
I am racing in polish off-road competitions for few years and almost finished my new suzuki jimny buggy. It has 2.0l vitara engine and Toyota lj70 axles. Here starts the problem - in Poland we have lot of sammurai parts (mostly calmini) but can't find any strenghten knuckles or axle shafts to toyota. I also need Ring & Pinion with lower gears - it's the most importand thing. T-case is already slower but lowering gears in axles should help sammi case in surviving 140hp and 35" tires. Thanks for help:)

this buggy is 1200kg.... to me - lower gears are not needed - you already are complaining about too many rpms at 60 mph

instead Im thinking you need to get more power (same overall drive ratio) for those 35's
 
Yep, it does not fit, cause my axles are 4.88. I am not sure if front one isn't ok, cause i tryed rear one at first. If you can tell me this - I will be happy :) Numberst of sets are TLCF-529R-NG and TV6-529-NG. However, i am not sure if buying 4.56 housing is the cheapest and the easiest solution. Can you tell me what is the differnce between 4.88 and 4.56 in millimeters or inches? I will simply turn the ring on the lathe, but I need to know how much. At the same time I will be looking for new houising with the right offset, but will it fit to my axles? Please post me back as quickly as possible. Thanks for helping me:) BTW we are installing turbo (around 0.5 BAR) to our car so it should produce about 200HP and 250nm:bounce: Rusty Philips - everything has changed when sammi T-case exploded. We decided to mount gearbox and T-case from LJ 70 (as it's writen at the begining). On our first race we used mostly first and second gear, few times 3rd and that's why we decided to lower gears and get turbo :) Maybe you know how many PSI we should pump FOX 2" diameter 4" travel if car weights right now 1300KGS (lj 70 parts are heavier than Suzuki).

OFFSET

We stock new bare cases for this reason. It will be hard to turn the ring gear down, and you will need to shorten the bolts too. I am not sure exactly what the difference in offset is, but I think its between .125"-.250"
