Hi all,

I just wanted to double check that I am on the right track before I spend money and pull my rear end apart. (HJ47 fully floating rear)

Im loosing rear diff oil somewhere, about 1L over a 2,500km trip.
Its not coming out of the pinion (no oil marks) or the breather (again no oil marks)
Even though there is no sign of a leak at the rear wheels it has to be leaving out of the seal there?

While Im there I will do the rear bearings which havnt been done in a few years. ?

Thanks for any advice.

losing 1L in 2500km trip? to us in the states that's over 1qt in 1500 miles give or take.
and no sign of it anywhere??

there's only a few places it could be going, out the pinion, out either axle hub end, out either hub inner seal onto the brakes, does a full float have a diff cover?, drain plug.

Hmmmm No. Gear oil takes 20 to 30 years to evaporate. So it you are losing it, it is getting out of somewhere. It is a pretty simple structure and a leak should present itself pretty clearly.

Was the vehicle level when you checked it? Was the oil hot /cold? Did it have the correct fill amount last time? If you're running a vacuum operated diff lock, maybe you now have a really good oil supply line to the pump!

Cheers

None of the above guys, no diff locks and it was full when I left.

And you missed the question, if its not leaking from the pinion, breather or the fill/drain then it has to be the axle seals right?

I dont want to pull the rear end apart only to find its not there.

Gear oil leaks are generally obvious since it makes a big sticky, clingy mess.

I would guess it was not full to begin with. I would replace the drain and fill gaskets, fill it, top it off after a short drive, and check it in a couple thousand miles. You may have nothing wrong at all.
