In June I'm headed down to pick up my barnless find 40. However I don't have a trailer. If anyone has a trailer for rent, preferably with a winch, in the metro area I'd love to chat with you.

I put myself through school driving a tow truck nights and weekends, so I know towing and securing loads FWIW.

I'm happy to sign a hold harmless agreement or liability waiver or whatever.

Or else I can do u haul and come alongs once I get there.

But figured I'd ask here first.

Tow rig is a 2012 tundra rock warrior.

There are several of us locals heading down to Central Arkansas the first week June to run the High Water Mark Trail.
Details here: Arkansas Overland Trip

If timing works out several are probably capable of driving their rigs back if the timing works out.

When do you need to go and where? My schedule is pretty flexible and could lend a hand or even take my tow rig (see signature).

I'm headed to Tucson Arizona. So it'll take about a week round trip. I'd going down sometime after June 8 and need to be back by June 17. I don't have all the details ironed out yet. We're moving states at the same time to complicate matters.

I realize this is a pretty huge favor.

I agree.

This is kind of an interesting situation though (but not logical or fiscally sound).

So this retired philosophy professor at the U of A divorced her husband who bought this without her consent. In the settlement she got the 40 and parked it for 25 years (out of spite?). She's on social security.

She had it advertised as a 69 and I saw that it was at least mid 70s. She has had many offers before but I was the first to tell her it was worth more than her asking price (I'd be horrible in business).

Because of philosophy and honesty, I was deemed a worthy purchaser .

I learned all about Plato over the phone...

Anyway. My wife and I are taking a month off work between our Minnesota and Kansas careers.

Wife said I needed to go pick this 40 up, meet the seller and bring it home. So I have a hall pass to do it.

It's not logical.

As she said, 'you're not buying a machine in the desert but an adventure. '

So here I am.

I'm thinking about reaching out to the local Tucson club and see if they'd help me out loading it on a u haul.

None of this makes any practical sense, but it makes for a good story.

I'm a sucker.

Tucson is a pretty long haul and unfortunately your time frame conflicts with a project and trip for me.

If you can have somebody meet you there for loading, a snatch block on the front of the trailer and tow rope to another vehicle can work easier than come alongs.

Your mileage savings for dragging a trailer that far unloaded would probably offset the higher cost of a Uhaul going one way. It is amazing how much drag the friction of 4 more tires and wheel bearing sets will have on your mileage.

All good points, and sound advice.

Shouldn't have ever sold my 8274. Damn.

By the way, I'm in the market for an 8274...

Buy a used trailer on CL for $1500 and sell it when u get home. I "borrowed" trailers like that several times over the years and ended up making a few bucks a every time. Id be watching for one at the destination/pick up location so I'd be towing one way.

I just sold my old tandem 20' for $1500 in 2hrs last month once listed on CL. Very easy to make go away.

You've got a good wife. Sounds like something mine would say!

Let's see. Cost to buy fj40, cost to go get fj 40, cost for parts for fj 40, costs to go play with fj 40. Just about as bad as a Willys. Definitely a good wifey.

More I've pondered it, this makes sense. If you can come up with the upfront cost you will probably lose less than what you give to Uhaul. Or grab one local and checkout postings in Midship going that way to defer some cost.

Heck ya! You don't even have to register it. Buy it with bill of sale, leave title blank, then bring to town, sell it off with new bill of sale. Done.

This idea is interesting to me. I'm going to start watching CL posts now.

I reached out to the local Tucson Land Cruiser Club and some generous souls have agreed to help me winch it on the trailer and aid where needed. Good bunch of guys down there.
