I am in the need of a trailer brake controller on my 2000 and what to see what other people have done. I was going to mount in ashtray like anther member but want something a little more permeant. Also have others routed there wires for a 7 pin trailer plug. If this is a repost sorry I missed in my search.

Brake Controller

I mounted mine on the lower left side below my steering column. I have a 2003 that had the wiring harness already installed. Hope this helps. Maybe we'll see you at Miller Sports Park next month at the Cruiserfest. Headed from Provo.

Mine is in the ashtray location as well. Srill have to do the wiring though.

I am curious does your knees every hit it in this location? I am 6'2 and worried this may not work for me also the :princess: is drives with the seat all the way forward wonder if she will hit it as well.

No they don't hit, it is further left than where my knees are. I'm 6'2 also. I'll try and take a photo today, I'm not sure why the photo above is backwards.

Same as kennyao30, no more ashtray.

Funny - had the same idea as OP driving on my way home tonight.

Want to get something installed before the next summer camping trip.

Thanks for posting up some ideas.

@OuttaTown - Haven't looked at the location since tearing apart interior and doing sound insulation last year, but are there any problems removing the DS lower trim? I assume not, just asking.

Also, has anyone installed on the center console or on the side of it? Pics? Bad location?

@SmoothLC

I did this a couple years ago, but I don't remember needing to remove the lower trim panel. I hijacked one existing fastener meant for the trunk/gas door latch, and drilled one more, along the bottom edge and out of sight, for the controller bracket.

When you put it in the ashtray, do you set up the wiring so you can remove it when not in use? Or are you guys just leaving it there? How do you mount it in the opening?

I'm running a Prodogy, so it doesn't have to be level. It is mounted to the right of the steering wheel, pretty much below the ignition. It is quick to manually hit the brakes if needed and adjust. The only downside is the light will reflect off the windshield at night. Not bad and not in a spot that is dangerous, but you notice it once it's pointed out to you. That being said, I think it is in the best position possible in a 100.

As for the 7-pin, I wanted to make sure I didn't rip it off wheeling. It got put behind the hitch:

Ashtray as well. Can't really be mounted any more recessed without trimming the panel. The brake lever underneath is easily accessible too.

I leave it in place as it isn't in the way.
