Hey Folks, I'm trying to source some steel rims for my BJ70. I want them to look like 40-style OEM rims or non-NA splits. The original wagon wheel type just don't float my boat :).

Right now I have aftermarket 15" polished alloys courtesy of a PO. Nice enough for the beach scene, I guess, but I'm trying to get more of an expedition/military look with tall skinnies.

Anyone have an idea of how I can move to something like the pic below? I contacted Stockton wheels and they'll ship five 16x6 powder-coated rims to me for about $1k USD. I'm hoping to do better since I still need buy tires and preserve my marriage!

Cheers,
Dennis

This the type you are after? Plenty around but the shipping is a killer, they must weigh 25kg each

That's the look I'm after, but I don't want splits. I know can change my own flats (if I can track down the tools and tubes), but I'll never find a shop in Winnipeg to balance the wheels.

Cheers,
Dennis

Whats so hard about balancing them?

i test drove a cruiser with skinny split rims on it last week it was a 2000 mdl with 200ks and was that most smoothst nicest driving cruiser ive ever driven no balance prob at all :)

I have some 15x6 OEM from a 40 serie here for you... need some sandblasting or good grinding session !

Send me a PM if you want to pay you a trip to Montréal !

I don't think I could get splits balanced where I live because splits are not well known here (Canada). Most garages would send me away for fear that my rims would decapitate their employees. I've done a bit of research on the splits and I understand that they're not really that dangerous, but I don't want the bother of trying to convince everyone of this.

Maybe a heavy truck shop could be convinced to do the job, but again, I don't really want the hassle.

Thanks, David. Do you, or anyone, know if the old OEM 40 rims will bolt on to a BJ70 without problems? I think I read that there were two types of those rims - one intended for drum brake trucks, the other for disk brakes?

Without problem !

Reads my signature... I have 40 and 70 serie LC and I have to interchange the two kind of wheel severale time.

Note : I have non-plit OEM rims

Dennis,

I've driven my LJ73 almost 5 years with 7.50x16 crossply's on split rims without problems. Balancing takes about just as much time as any other somewhat bigger mud tire. ( I know what i'm talking about it seems to be my job). When properly fitted and balanced they drive as well as any other tire/wheel combo. Wenn I sold my cruiser I kept 10 original 5.5x16 split rims in good condition. I want to keep 5 of them since I 'm looking for an other Cruiser, the other 5 are up for sale.....the only problem is I'm living in Holland and I think shipping costs are more than the asking price. But if your interessted sent me an PM

bull, i have had splits ballanced all over Alberta, Ontario. there isn't a shop that won't BALANCE a split but most will not remove the ring.

the stock rims are now obsolete. a old chev 16" 6 hole will fit fine and you might still find the old style that way.

.

What do they find so hard about removing the ring,is there some other type of split rim which has a bad reputation?

I had some tyres fitted at large garage which specialised in 7.50x16 tyres.
They had these big build guys doing landcruiser splits on the floor using 6 ft bars with sliding weights to break the bead
They were doing 1 every 3-4 mins and then inflating them with no cage or anything while they and the customers stood around.
Obviously they have never had one go off.

it is the North American version of the splits that injured some workers so basicly all shops banned working on them. i suspect the workers were not installing the rings properly and then inflating.
i have installed many of the Toyota splits with no issues.

as for:
Hmm. Well these two threads on MUD have posts from guys saying that they had a bit of a hassle finding shops to balance their split rims.

Maybe that's just a big city USA thing?

well, if you don't feel comfortable with splits then don't buy them, personally, i really don't care one way or the other.

I went with these 16" Toyota steelies. Not exactly what I wanted, but close and the price was good.

The new tires are Firestone Destination MT 235/85/16.

I got the tires and rims together from a Canadian web store called TireTrends. The link to the rims is here:
Steel Wheels New Toyota Wheels | TireTrends : Save on Steel Wheels New Toyota wheels!

I paid $62 CDN each (about $60 USD) and since I was buying rubber, too, I had free shipping to my door.

I believe the Toyota part # might be STL69358U45. I'm pretty sure that these are the 18-hole 16"x7" rims that were used for the spares on '96-'02 4Runners. If this is true, your local wrecker might have a bunch of these in near new condition.

No spacers were needed to clear calipers, etc. My tires are on the skinny side so your results may vary.

Cheers,
Dennis

Update: I noticed a little evidence of rubbing on the tie rods, so spacers are needed up front. Bummer.
