Hello! I'm new to the forum and just wondering if anyone can offer some basic details/info on the Toyota 5L diesel engines? What sort of maintenance should be done/when, common issues, things to watch out for, upgrades, etc.

I just purchased a 2000 Toyota Dyna 4wd truck with a 5L(3000cc) diesel engine from auction however know very little about these vehicles and diesel engines in general. The vehicle only has around 10,000kms on it so almost nothing but being a 18 year old engine, wondering what sort of maintenance I should look at doing? Timing belt? Glow Plugs? Anywhere to find service manuals for the 5L?

Hoping to find some resources or other owners to chat with so I can familiarize myself with the vehicle before it is delivered!

Also, can anyone recommend other good resources for the Japanese Dyna/Hiace/Toyoace series of 4WD trucks?

Thanks!

Thanks for the manual links! Those will be a big help! Much appreciated.

Yes, certainly won't be breaking any speed records but going for reliability and simplicity so should fit the bill. Are there any common issues with the 3L or 5L engines that I should be aware of?

I don't think so. From what I hear they will go a very long time if left stock and well maintained. I do recommend running a diesel additive to add extra lubrication to the fuel. This will help your rotary injection pump last longer. Some people even add 200:1 ratio of 2 cycle oil. Lots of threads on this. Generally the rotary injection pump's wear starts to show around the 300,000km mark.

Not really, plenty of them do 300000klms+ in Australia. You will probably get more information off Aussie forums as these engine are common in the Hilux. There is also a 5LE which has a computer brain.

Thank you! I'll definitely do some reading on additives. Any recommendations on North American oil for the L series of engines? Most forums I have read reference oil that's not available in NA. Is Shell Rotella overkill? Or is the higher cost worth it for longevity? I'd like to run a 0W40 or 5W40 given the cold climate in Alberta. Most recommendations I have seen reference 15W30 or 15W40 but that seems to be in warmer climates.

Thanks for the response! Can you recommend any good Aussie forums? I had seen that there are two versions of the 5L, one with electronic injection, the other without. My hope is that with a non electronic 5L there's less to go wrong!

Your summers are just as hot as anywhere else. So run Rotella 15w40 in the warm months. The non synthetic Rotella is plenty good - goes on sale at Canadian Tire. In winter, you'll need to change to a less viscous oil. Just go with the Toyota recommendation. I can't remember off the top of my head right now. It's in the manual I believe.

I found the 5w40 full synthetic Rotella made winter starting a LOT easier compared to the 15w40 mineral Rotella, so I just run that all year now.

You could try Outer Limits. I dont know if its busy or not. I havent been there for years . Not many 4wd dynas in Australia but lots of other toyotas with the 5L.I beleive the 4wd dynas are using the same drive train as Hilux.

Hi Drew
I’ve owned my hilux for 4 years it has the 5 l engine with a aftermarket hi flow turbo system on it my maintenance schedule is every 5000 oil filter fuel filter oil change check the belts and i grease everything underneath I brought my manual from be Haynes I found the best only problem I have had is the alternator I’ve replaced it twice in four years that was due to previous owner installing a amp apparently to auto electrician amp was draining battery upgrades i recommend dual battery system and get ur engine injectors checked in diagnostic system other than that I’m quite happy with my Hilux

Timing belt kit and water pump at required klms is a must also 3 inch exhaust and turbo if u want that little bit extra other than that there a good engine no land speed record s broken but I can put a car trailer on back with car and tow it no problems good luck with ur hilux drew

There are thousands of 5Ls in vans and utes here in NZ. They're a solid motor and they don't have the reputation here like 1KZs do (cracked heads and gaskets).
They routinely do big KM - north of 300,000 isn't uncommon - Here's one for sale Trade Me - https://www.trademe.co.nz/a/motors/cars/toyota/hilux/listing/3951862959

My recommendation would be
Oil and filter every 5000 (any decent 15w-40 diesel oil).
Fuel filter every 2nd oil change (probably overkill but I've had bad fuel here before)
at those KM it shouldn't need a timing belt, but its now 23 years old if it hasn't been replaced. Check it for cracking etc and then make a call.
Injectors and Pump are probably fine and shouldn't need touching until north of 100,000km.

Maybe run some fuel treatment for the first few tanks to keep things clean.

seems like there are ver few 5Ls in north america and not a huge amount of information online, considering how many of thee engines are out there. I'm trying to do a deep dive on possible 5L rebuild and probably future upgrades for it.

In terms of typical maintenance schedules, I found the info posted by Toyota Gibraltar handy for my own purposes:
https://www.toyota-gib.com/eng/aftersales/maintenance-schedules.html
Click on the "Previous Models" section and take a look at "Hilux (pre 2006)". Even though it mentions 2L and 3L engines, from a cross check of my hard copy service log book that came with my 5L equipped LN167R that I bought new, it lines up just fine to be applicable to a 5L engine. Good enough to get started anyway. I'm sure there will be all sorts of nuanced opinion but this comes from a dealer with a long history in the brand, so I think that's worth something / adds weight in terms of credibility.
