I'm needing new shocks for my 100, and since my FJ40 project is taking forever I'm having a void in my life. The void is getting out into the desert and getting into some rough territory like I used to do in my 4Runner. I am wanting to do a mild lift to fit some larger tires, but am not happy with the $900+ cost on some of these proper kits. I'm sure I already know the answer, but I want to know if anyone knows of any good package deals on springs/shocks/Tbars/Diff drop that would come in cheaper than that. Otherwise, it looks like I'll be sticking to the regular trail rides. :meh:

You can find the OME shocks, tbars and springs at good prices if you look around (rocky road outfitters comes to mind) but it will be difficult to find an alternative to Slee's diff drop bracket.

Good luck.

Call slee offroad.

He has kits availbile depending on the type of rig you have ( steel bumpers or stock).

Edit: didn't read the whole thing. I'm running OME866 springs with the tbars cranked. No diff drop.

No leaking or problems. For 100$ you can't beat it! You may want to get ome tbars if you plan on running a bar with winch in the future.

Does your front still align well with the Tbars cranked? How about travel? Do you offroad the truck much?

drives well. I have a lift of 2" in the rear and 1.5 in the front. Im planning on swapping the springs out for taller (2.5") and lifting the front more when I get the OME tbars in soon.

My front end with my current setup flexes awesome. Since the tbars are stock, they are softer (spring rate) than OME ones. This enables compression and flexing without anything fighting. the wheels tuck easily and droop nicely. My freind has OME T-Bars and isnt running any steel bumpers (arb), he has wheel lift more than I do, and it takes more to compress his front end, I would assume if he was running a ARB bull bar and winch, it would be simliar to stock compression.

Here are a few shots of my front flex. I believe I am the only one running this type of setup. I enjoy the ride (very similar to stock, rear is stiffer, front is still soft) and looks good. If you looking for shocks, bilsteins from ebay (260 bucks) and some used springs from the classifieds. or mine in a few weeks when I swap them for different ones.

I try to get out and wheel once a month, sometimes I can squeeze 3 times. Just got out of school, and work the night shift. So the day is all to me :) ! Theres alot of trails where I live and a ton of "cough cough" construction areas closed that are turning into mud pits and little crawlings spots.

The Bilsteins on EBAY for our truck, those will still work with the 1.5"-2" lift the OME springs give do you know?

Liam runs billies with a lift. No reported problems. Maybe he will comment if he sees this thread. Or PM him.

If my oem ones have held up. The billies will!

Sounds good, thanks for the input. Cheapest I've found for an almost full setup (minus diff drop) is around $700 for OME spring, shocks, and TBars. It's around $550 for the set of Bilsteins and new OME springs. For another $150, I might as well just get a whole package eh?

id go for the whole package. get it all done at once.

if you do it my way. if you add wieght, you loose height. so that will lead to something else having to be done.

do the lift. if your CV's have a vibe/leaking, get a diff drop.

https://forum.ih8mud.com/100-series-cruisers/244159-no-low-budget-lift.html

I am going with the diff bracket mod for $15. Used rear springs of $75 and $260 for the billies (not 100% on this one). Total outlay of $350.

The only armor I run is Bump It Off Road step sliders and may add a hidden winch setup behind the stock bumper at some point.

Schotts - How is your diff mod holding up? I know you and Doron were probably the first ones to make this mod in the USA.

Before anyone can really answer your question ideally, we need to know two things:

1. Do you have a front or rear aftermarket bumper(s)?

2. Do you plan to get them, and if so, about when?

Still perfect. Though Slee and some others said by guy can't weld worth a crap. :D

Not necessarily

Doubtful I'll get aftermarket bumpers. Probably add some sliders, but that weight is negligeable I'm sure.

That answer combined with your original post of:

"The void is getting out into the desert and getting into some rough territory like I used to do in my 4Runner. I am wanting to do a mild lift to fit some larger tires, but am not happy with the $900+ cost on some of these proper kits."

What I read in your original post is:

Get out into rough contry...want a mild lift...larger tires...not happy with the $900 price of a lift kit.

Have I got that right? If so you need very little to accomplish this.

Stage 1:

Front: Raise your factory T-bars to 2-inches lift just as you would if you bought aftermarket T-bars. Cost = $0 parts

Rear: Swap factory springs for OME 865. The ride will be a tad stiffer, a tad, and it will actually improve your ride with 4 or more folks (or some gear) inside. Cost: $166/pair. (slee)

This option will retain a near-factory ride quality while lifting the vehicle 2". Cost is $166 parts.

Stage 2: (when you are ready to upgrade)(IF you ever feel you want them. You may not for your use):

Add front and rear OME shocks. This will stabilize your ride on and off road. It'll add some rear travel as well (not much) and be more stout from flying rocks. Cost = About $400 (slee) Now your total is $566.

NOTE: Watch your front CV's after your lift. If they leak too much then add the diff drop. Cost = $0 because you say you can do it. Total now is $566

Bottom line: It cost's you $0 more to do this in stages because you won't need to undo and redo anything along the way.

If I were you I'd buy 865 springs and lift it 2-inches. Drive it a couple a times in your "rough stuff". IF...IF you need to add a bit of stiffness/control go get OME shocks THEN.

My sliders weight 90 lbs each.

Is that post/spec for reference to my recommendation? If so, so what? :) 180-lbs = 1 person riding in the truck.

865's will work killer in the rear with sliders. Front T-bars will adjust to 2" lift. Perfect.

And by the way...tire-wise? Add about $100 in parts to Phase 1, do the diff drop, and run 315 (35's) tires instead of 285/295. ;) $166 plus $50 plus $100 = $316 for 2.75" front and 3" rear lift and 315's! Same ride quality pretty-much!

I have to do the shocks anyway, so it looks like pricewise I should get the set of Bilsteins, OME865's, and work out the diff drop. I can probably get a decent set of AT's for the Tundra 20's that should look OK on there and be daily streetable, and then I have my stocker 16"s that I will put some meat on. Thanks for the advice guys, just about cut the cost here in half for what I really need.

Shotts,

Thanks for this...I was going to PM you with the question you answered here. I don't plan on adding bumpers and my "wheeling" will be mild. I jumped into a full OME HD lift with my 4Runner, and while I loved the ride height, the stiff suspension was too much for the family. You just saved me money, time and disappointment. Thanks!
