Long story,
In short, I messed up pretty bad in college and got a couple charges on my record. But I learned from my mistakes, and it finally came off my record and I can finally buy some more guns! VERY EXCITED! I'll provide details later, It's a good story. lol

So if anyone knows anyone selling a 12 guage, pump preferably. I would be very interested!
I dont know alot about thew concealed weapon permit classes, but I really want to take them. Eric, I know you have your permit, and I'm sure alot more of you do, so I know some of you can tell me alot more than I know now.
Thanks!
Ryan

well if you'd answer my PM on Facebook I'd fill you in. lol. Slacker. Yeah I have my CCP. I took the class through First Shot Personal Protection in Walkertown. Amazing and hilarious instructor. He goes through all the required material but also does some drills like defensive shooting, shooting on the move, using cover and some intruder type drills. It is $75 for the course. Once completed you have to file the paperwork with the local Sheriff's office. That run's $95 and can take up to 90 days turnaround for the permit but it depends on how busy they are. It's good for 5 years. Well worth it IMO. I am a HUGE supporter of carrying all the time. You just never know what can happen and I could not live with myself if something happened to my family and I could not protect them. The class is 8 hours on a Saturday or Sunday. If you want to go let me know because I am planning on sending Stacy and she would love to have someone there that she knows.

There are a few places I check for guns. TheHighroad.org, Armslist, and carolinashooterforums.com I've bought and sold a ton of stuff off CSF with great luck. pretty good variety of firearms as well. I currently only have one 12g in the stable so I am not in the market to sell. You looking for a pump or Auto. What are you going to use it for? home protection, hunting?

Just give me a call and I'll help you any way I can bud.

Eric covered it pretty good. Search around for the CCP classes. There are several near you and they range from 75-100 usually. But if you look some folks provide firearm, ammo, lunch (hey thats 20 bux at least) for the course.

Southern firearms is expecting a department trade in block or Remington 870 pumps anyday now. If your not afraid of buying sight unseen ive used armslist and gunbroker but youll have to pay an FFL transfer. Wish Id joined CSF sooner as the two guns i sought out and bought were both on there used in great condition :(

biggest ? is what you plan to use it for.

Dont combine a pistol grip and a mossberg........safety is not in the right spot and a bit dangerous.
Just take a trip to some of your local gun stores. Ive seen some used and new pump 12ga for 2-300 around here. Colfax guns and ammo has a few.

HR semi auto....

I have a HR semi auto shotgun. 12ga camo sythetic stock. I can bring it in feb if you want to look at it.

I may have another for sale. The ducks unlimited banquet is comming up. Last year I won a remington 887 12 ga and a Marlin 243 rifle! So maybe I will win a another gun or two and give a hell of a deal to some one. :grinpimp:

yeah the Gun Rack here in Kernersville is pretty good too. Also, if looking at a handgun I would consider a membership to a place like Calibers....$30 for 3 months and they rent guns too for $6. You can try several different ones out to see what you are going to like. Nothing worse than dropping $500 +/- on a new gun then not being able to shoot it well. I agree with Jason on the pistol grips and that style safety on the Mossy's. For a basic Shotgun I just love the 870's....you can hunt with them just fine. They are under $300 new and you can get a shorter replacement barrel fairly cheap if you are looking for a home defense weapon.

I keep forgetting about Southern Firearms. I think I know what I am doing at lunch today.

But like mentioned earlier...lets us know what you plan on using it for and we can probably better point you in the right direction.

I plan on duck, and deer hunting. And also some fun clay shooting with friends. I know a range in eastern NC, forget the name, that has a "14 hole golf course type setup" for skeet shooting. Been there 4 or 5 times and never had so much fun on my feet.

As for the pistol, just for protection and some fun at the range.

Thanks for the info fellas, Eric, i may be calling you this weekend.

Adam, Please bring those! I'll bring some loot. :) Would love to get a gun from a friend knowing its in good condition and used properly.

Eric, check your FB PM's. Sent monday when I got your response, Slacker! :D

I'll throw my 2 cents in here...

I can't agree more with getting a chance to shoot a variety of handguns to find what fits your hand the best before making a commitment. Yet, that comes with understanding and learning a proper grip/stance. Just as any new skill, building a proper foundation and avoiding having to break bad habits is important, particularly when one is handling a device as powerful as a handgun.

I belong to Sir Walter Gun Club in Hester, its nice, all outdoor (with plenty of overhead cover), small arms ranges, 100 yd range, 2 skeet ranges and an archery range w/fishing pond. We offer CCP courses as well as basic, tactical and other courses to the public. A bit far to venture when you have courses much closer but another option just in case.

I'll share that when I first received my CCP on the west coast, I had only shot down a lane at an indoor range. Walking around in the "real world", giving thought about "situational awareness", one realizes that only shooting down a lane is very limiting in understanding what it may be like to use a firearm in a "real" situation. This is what got me into shooting IPSC/USPSA and IDPA matches. I've taken "tactical" course and shooting matches has honed my skill set dramatically as compared to a few hours with a "tactical expert".

I bring this up because having a lethal device on your hip is a huge responsibility and having the expertise to operate it is more than just hitting a "humanoid" target at 10 yrds, or closer, when you take the course. I've helped in courses (I'm no instructor) and was genuinely concerned seeing some people pass the course yet I'd be very concerned if they had to protect themself.

All I'm trying to say in this long-winded reply is its just the beginning. Regular practice is vital, practice pulling from concealement, dry firing, trigger control and live fire is an on-going responsibility for those of us who carry. I just personally know people that have their CCP but haven't shot their handgun since passing the test. Not a good thing IMHO...

This is worth a helluva lot more than $0.02 Very good info here. Like Jerry said, getting the permit is the smallest part of the process. There is so much more involved when it comes to carrying responsibly. There were a few people in my class that honestly scared the chit out of me knowing they would be carrying a firearm.

Jerry I am going to hit you up later as I have been very interested in the shooting sports.

Jerry nailed it! I've had my concealed carry for awhile now. Its a huge responabiliity!

I had a few people in my class that scared me too! Im no expert marksman but I know my safety!

I personally prefer sigs and smith and wessons mp for pistols. Inface im going to the gun show in new bern this weekend.

Ryan is you want I will bring all of my shotguns 4 so u can test shoot em if you want.

Please do.... Andrea and I are also looking into buying something within the next year or so.... I know she would be stoked to fire something. :D

LOTS of good advice here Ryan.

Jerrys points cant be stressed enough. Kudos to diggin deeper than the topic and bringing up the most important aspects to consider. Much more than passing a class and making a purchase. Training and practice are vital to making yourself more capable and less dangerous in a situation of need. Join up on a forum and browse around; lots of certified trainers here in NC. Theres a intro to firearms training course this weekend and another one in the works for later this year through trace armory (not one of their special focus courses, but an intro to formal training)

I did as Eric mentioned and joined a range, rented every gun I considered purchasing, shot them side by side to determine the one I was most comfortable and capable with and thats what made up my mind. good luck in the search, have fun, and be safe.

Plus you dont want to be like this guy.......................
Thats not a good story to tell later.

woops (NSFW-language)

and that was with a paper dude staring him down :D

the paper dude looks pretty scary though. It is scary how many "i shot myself" videos there are on youtube once you go to that link.

Ryan,
As far as the 12Ga. I have a Belgium browning A-5 i would sell you. (disclaimer: it currently slam fires) so you may get a pretty good deal.

A slam fire is exactly why barrel control and gun safety is so important. The first time it happened, i was shooting clays with a buddy. I have 4 in the tube and 1 in the chamber. When i clicked it shut, it pretty much went full auto with all five rounds b/c every time is shut, it subsequently slam fired, then, repeated the process. That certainly woke me up.

thats a true classic!

In at the meet and great I will bring: REMINTON 887, REMINGTON 870, HR SEMIAUTO AND the mossberg defender. I will also bring my sig 40 cal and my keltec 9mm pistols. If anybody wants i can bring the 30-06, .243. 270? I alos have .30 cal carbine.

let me kow

police instructor shoots himself in the foot for the class - YouTube

still my favorite "I'm the only one in this room special enough to handle this weapon" pow

I remember that one without even looking. it's a classic and too funny.

Ryan I had a great lunch break today. went to Southern Firearms and Colfax Guns and ammo. Not much in stock in the 12g flavor at a decent price. I will say that Walmart here in K-Vegas has an 870 pump for $270. It was not a total loss of a trip though. I just had to buy a box of Hornaday Critical defense for the 40. lol

Have you checked Mace Sports there in Burlington/Mebane. they seem to have a ton of inventory on their website with a price list. Also if you want to do some pricechecking you can always check gunbroker.com. kinda like gun ebay. You'd have to have then ship to a FFL but most dealers only charge $25 transfer fee.

Eric and the rest, thanks for the positive replies. I always have to check myself when this topic comes up, it can be very volatile to many. We have lost close (at least I thought so) friends due to this topic and finding out there are firearms in my house (in a very expensive safe I might add).

Eric, anytime, I miss shooting matches. I shot 3-4 matches a month for over 7 years and haven't done it as much the past few. I prefer IPSC/USPSA although an occasional IDPA match is ok. I prefer matches where someone can't take points away because they thought you didn't use your cover appropriately.

Sir Walter hosts a match the first Sat every month, anytime you want to come see what its all about, it would be a good day for sure...
