I live in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

I will be at the Overland Expo in October. I will be presenting as an instructor for the 2nd time.

I am evaluating the possibilities of doing “something else” that I usually do after the Expo in October.

I have done the Blue Ridge Parkway, Skyline Drive as well as CALO (several time) and the Otter Banks by the Hwy 12 up to Corova.

I have 7 to 8 days to spend after the Expo.

What else could I do within a radius of 350+ miles of Arrigton VA.

It could be a proposal that involves a journey of several destinations.

I will be happy to know your proposal. I am an experienced driver and respectful person. I will be alone, so I would avoid the trails too difficult.

Windrock TN is outside Knoxville TN, and just a bit outside of your 350 mile radius from Arrington. However worth the trip if you want to do some technical wheeling in the mountains. You could also hit some service road trails on your way back through the mtns of NC.

Another suggestion would be to head home via Virginia beach area and the Chesapeake bay bridge, up the eastern shore of VA and MD. There is beach driving in Assateague, similar to what you have experienced at the outer banks. You can then continue north through Ocean City, MD and into Rehoboth, DE (stop at Dogfish head brewery on the way!) and then catch the ferry over to Cape May, NJ before taking 95 the rest of the way back.

I'm sure others will have more suggestions. Safe travels!

It's the same day that Overland Expo East ends and you said you have been to parts of the outer banks before, but a few of us are doing a couple of nights on the North Core Outer Banks (Sunday Oct. 6th to Tues. Oct. 8th) which is an uninhabited island only accessible by private ferry. We're catching a ferry Sunday AM but you could make your own way and meet up with us Sunday afternoon or Monday for a one-night stay if you're interested and can't make that time.

More info here in the thread.

It would be a bit more than 350 miles but there's several areas in the Pisgah National Forest of NC that make for great overlanding and dispersed camping.

I'm sure others have better suggestions in Virginia closer to you but I haven't made it up there much, but have heard good things about the Scales campground.

I'd suggest heading into the George Washington National Forest in Virginia. This would be a perfect place to wander, without fear of getting into gnarly situations. I've only traveled around the GWNF west of Harrisonburg, VA, and there's tons of forest service roads, some legit 4WD trails, awesome scenery. Plus it doesn't put you far out from your path back north. Regardless of what you do or where you go, be safe and enjoy the hell out of it!

I met you at OXE 2 years ago. I was parked next to you in the silver SAS’d 100.

Thank you all for these recommendations, which I will study carefully. It's not impossible that all this is pointless and I'll resign myself to going to CALO again (it's so beautiful, pleasant and above all very different from what I see at home). However, @thecapedcapper for Portsmouth Island, I'm unlikely to join as I prefer the south core ;).
