What I really want to do is make the 40 road safe and legal again.

And pick up a FJ62 to use as a parts rig to convert the 2F'd 60 to 2FE.

Your tan 40? With the aux lighting panel? Think I saw it way back in the day...

That's the one. It runs fine but has 180 degrees of dead space in the steering (want to go FJ60 power steering) and brakes at all corners are in need of mucho work. Then there's that aggravating thing called insurance.

Last year, 2 -3 times, in the Wetumpka area I saw a woman in a solid tan 40.

Some pics of the 40.

A buddy of mine used to have a Miata. He looked like mr. Incredible driving around in that little thing.

I love my little accord. I get about 28mpg its so much better than the cruiser I don't try to drive it conservatively. If I really wanted to I could probably squeeze 30 out of it.

03 vw tdi (don't flame me)
Make sure it's the AlH engine and a manual
Gonna cost you 2k for a V6 clutch and Timing job.
After that it will run for ever.
I put about 100k on it in three years. Got 46 mpg doing 80 and putting my foot to the floor at every stop light.

This is the truth. My father in law has put over 250k on 3 of them, and has 2 brand new ones that he's working on doing the same.

He uses them as shop vehicles for his business so they don't have to drive the duallys everywhere on service calls. Also drives his to jacksonville FL just about every weekend, hence racking up the mega miles.

We bought my wife a '10 Jetta Sportwagen used, and it's been a great car so far. 42mpg allllll day long on the interstate at 75mph, ac blowing cold, and car loaded.

I'd agree with this.

Let me expand the V6 clutch.
In VW's infinate wisdom they designed a "dual mass Fly wheel and clutch" because they thought that there would be too many service calls avout vibrations through the clutch from the diesel vibrating. Those clutches are Junk and they can't handle the torqe of the diesel.
Luckily the VR6 and fly wheel will bolt right in it makes for a stiff clutch but with the amount of torqe a TDI puts out they are suposed to last the life of the vehicle. That is until you decided to start modding the motor for 200hp like I did. Mine would slip if I floored it on the highway but it never wore out.

Dang, I thought by DD you meant Destructive Device. Forget the Miata, I know where there's a really nice TR6!

I was hoping you would offer up the TR6, it would deliver optimum gas mileage 'cuz it'll never run :D Could you sweeten the deal and throw in a black Suburban as a tow vehicle?

Gavin wants to come some time.

An 04 tdi is by far the worst vehicle I have ever owned.

And I used to DD a wrangler with 200k miles.

Yes must be a 99-03 and a Manual... Autos are terrible.

Thankfully I had a manual. So it was just a thousand dollar clutch not a 5k dollar transmission.
I did learn after the fact that 04- something like 09, when ever it was that they did the overhaul are the worst years. I hear stories that a 99-02 with a 5speed are nearly indestructible. I just can't believe there could be such a quality difference without a serious change in management/engineering/production or ownership of the company.

Funny, I was going to blaspheme and suggest an old four banger yj wrangler. As long as you keep small tires they are low maintenance and fun to drive around town.

Mine was a 97, TJ. 4cyl. The PO replaced the entire electrical system. Steering box exploded once, that was fun. I replaced 5th gear twice in 20k miles and there was always something that had me at the parts store. But at least they weren't thousand dollar repairs and a shop visit like the TDI.

You probably had first model year gremlins. I had a 93 v6 and it was fun and fast but not terribly fuel efficient. It lasted 100k plus for me through college with virtually no maintenance and the only failures were from the total lack of pm. It was stolen, totaled, and replace by a 95 4cyl that was slow but reliable and super easy to work on. Not great on the highway but fun and easy to drive around town.

I think ford and dodge both run the dual mass flywheel/clutch setups too.... I think that's one of the first things to go when you start trying to hot-rod on one.

in regard to DD...honda or toyota...pick your poison..
