I have had a dream to own a landcruiser since I was 12 and I am finally getting to a place that I might be able to purchase one now that I am a little older (21). I am looking for any 40/43/45/47 etc. Preferably in the $15k and under range. Frankly I have been looking for a long time and I haven't found what I want, or if I do I am always too late. Unfortunately I am starting to get discouraged and give up. So if you have any encouragement for me or ideas that would be good too. Thanks!

Update:
Here are the things I am looking for:
-Any year, but I really like the look of the round bezel.
-F or 2F engine
-Any color
-As little rust as possible but I don't mind cleaning some up
-Close to original and stock

I will be honest I have not done too much work on old cars, but I grew up working on farms and learning how to fix things as I go. I think it will be tough but a good learning experience. This would be an around town kind of car and weekend trips to the mountains (and the occasional date hopefully haha)

Are you me? Haha I'm in the exact same boat. Although slightly older (35), I've always dreamt of owning one, been looking on and off for the last few years, DID give up at one point and bought something else, but am now back on the hunt and even more eager than ever. I also suffer from the same problem as you do, having something very particular in mind.

I know the feeling of trying to find something for $15k, too. I agree there are not a lot of great options in that range that fit the vision I have of my perfect FJ40. Some occasional gems for sure, but yeah few and far between. So as I've continued to search I've continued to save. This has kept me encouraged knowing that one way or another my budget and my perfect truck WILL intersect. I really am feeling closer than ever today.

Of course there is the option of buying one of those cheap beaters and transforming it into my perfect truck, which I would absolutely love to do if only I had the space for it. My current 1 car garage is a rental space that would not be suitable for a long term teardown and rebuild project. However in addition to searching daily for a truck, I'm also searching daily for options to change that. So I'm encouraged in this regard as well by realizing that I have the capacity to alter my life in order to better accommodate my goals, which in this particular case is to own and enjoy an awesome FJ40. As long as the enthusiasm is there, you can remain motivated knowing that you can and will do whatever it takes.

My gut tends to know immediately if a particular truck speaks to me or not, which I imagine is a feeling you are familiar with too. I agree those do tend to be quite rare which can be discouraging, especially when those gems suddenly turn into missed opportunities. What this has continued to do though is help me really hone in on what I know I want, what I know I don't want, and in what areas I can be a little more flexible. It's an iterative process that takes time, but I believe it will pay off in the long run so I am happy to remain patient with it.

One thing I will say that has definitely clicked for me in recent months which hadn't before, is a much stronger feeling of being absolutely ready. Previously I found myself being a little too wishy washy in my search, making more excuses than I needed to, and not really being "all in." Now that I have a confident amount of cash on standby, have learned more about what precisely it is I want, and have put myself into the mindset of being ready and willing to act on a moment's notice, those feelings of disappointment and frustration of the past have rallied into a newfound wave of excitement and optimism.

Interpret all of that how you want, but yeah I figured I would share my own experience thus far since it's something I think about every single day.

Obviously I'm still on the hunt myself so can't really offer any legitimate buying advice, but do want to mention a couple of key search techniques that have helped open up a lot more options to me now that my search has gotten serious:

-Craigslist search alerts - I have a search alert for "FJ40" setup for all Craigslist hubs within 1,000 miles from me, with an automatic e-mail being sent as soon as something comes up. There is some noise to sort through for sure, but it puts about 4 FJ40s in front of me every week.

-Autotempest.com - This is great for checking multi-regional listings on Craigslist too, but also more importantly, Facebook Marketplace. It remembers your search criteria, so it's very quick to go to the site and take a quick glance at a few neighboring cities every day or two. I have to be careful though because I also tend to see a lot of other awesome vintage stuff available on there which distracts me haha.

-This forum, obviously. I'm sure you are already subscribed to the classifieds page here, but yeah a lot of options are posted here regularly. I have another classic car which I bought from somebody on the enthusiast forum over there, and am hoping to luck out with the same sort of great experience here with an FJ40.

Again, just my two cents, but stay motivated and good luck!!

- Is your home garage suitable?

- Will you get up early to exercise your dog cold start your FJ40?

- How busy is your lifestyle …for slow driving?

@Austinc it would help if you listed year preference, color preference, options, how competent of a mechanic you are, etc. It shows you’ve done your homework. This would help those that might have or know of one to determine if it fits what your looking for.

Also check here: craigslist - Who's looking for an FJ40 in the $10,000 range? 67 and a 72 - https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/whos-looking-for-an-fj40-in-the-10-000-range-67-and-a-72.1252635/page-7#post-14386054
Thanks I will update a few things. I appreciate it mate!

This is some great advice! Thank you! I do feel in the same boat with you there. I am hoping that something works out soon, but I think that I just need to be patient too. I haven't done the alerts on craigslist yet, so that is a great idea. I have also tried just driving around and looking in fields and in driveways for them, and I have actually found quite a few. Unfortunately most are either rust pots or out of my price range.

Does anyone else have any advice on ways to find them? (websites, other forums, tips for finding them local, coercing someone out of theirs for a good deal etc)

Missed the boat on getting what you're asking for that price.
I got mine out of Utah 3 years ago for less, found it on here in the classifieds

Craigslist and classifieds on here are probably the best options unless you come across something locally

Yep this sounds about right! Here is my situation:
-Yes I am so ready to own an FJ40 I think.
-Hopefully, I won't be able to do anything crazy to it, but I think I can keep it on the road.
-I don't have a garage at my apartment, but over the summer I will be at home with a large garage and lots of tools etc. Then once I am back at school in the fall it will be outside with a limited number of tools.
-You bet! Seems like a good time to me
-I think that is half the fun! I have a different car if I need to get places road trip wise.
-Hopefully I will do it myself with help from MUD members and a local toyota off-roading group.
-Unfortunately no, my roommate (brother) likes land rovers, so I think it is my duty to convert him to cruisers! Hopefully I win him over soon.
-My dad doesn't like oil on the driveway, but I can park in the dirt i guess, or throw some cardboard down if she's leaking
-Nope, I am the only one with the bug. I found a fellow just down the road from me that has a '76 I think. I left a note on his cruiser and he seems to like them as much as I do.

Have you tried looking on FB? There’s a ton of 40’s for sale all for under $15k in various conditions. Some running/driving some not. Now for 45’s I don’t think you’ll see much other than those needing major work/restoration for less than $20k. I’ll update the FB 40’s thread tomorrow with all the recent finds from CA to VA.
