My FJ80 needs new shoes. I have a set of new Cooper Discoverer SRX M&S 245/65R17 tires that I took off my everyday truck because the wife says "too noisy" and I'm thinking that they would probably work OK on the LC. Not the best, but OK. I can also pick up a decent looking set of used Granite Alloy 17x8.5J ET1 wheels locally for $50 apiece (different lug nut?). My biggest concern is the ET1 offset. The offset on the 15" rims is ET8. Is that too much difference? Not looking to have to insert any spacers or anything like that. I'm running some BFG 33" tires on the 15" rims now, but don't really need a tire that big. Truthfully they are too heavy for me to change a tire anymore. After the 245/65s wear out I'll probably go with something taller again. Thanks for the help.

What does et1, et8 mean in terms of backspace measurements?

Stock 80series wheels have 4½" backspacing. If offset is increased, you can run into clearance problems.

8.5" wide rim is getting kinda wide for a 245 wide tire, particularly if it will see offroad use

Found this ET/Backspacing conversion calculator. Looks like there is a slight change in backspacing with the Granite rim. If the calculator is correct the backspacing changes from 4.56" to 4.79". So, I guess the question becomes "is another .23" of offset a problem?"

No the wheels offset should be good if your "et" conversion is correct. Bigger tires would be better, those are quite a bit smaller then stock and right at the limit for being too narrow for those wheels.

Yeah. Probably "just having them" isn't a good enough reason to put them on. I do go places where the extra ground clearance really helps. Thanks to all for the advice.

Rim deal fell through. Too slow... Had a guy contact me with some 7.5x17 30mm offset wheels off a Tacoma. Is anyone running these on an FJ80? They would increase the backspace by almost an inch. Looks to me like that might be too much backspace. Or am I wrong? Thanks.

Sell those tires you have and buy some that fit the wheels you have. Those tires are too small and the money you spend on different wheels might as well go to a set of tires.

I picked up a similar set cheap enough I was willing to try them for my budget build. With 265/70r17 BFGs (stock tire height) you do loose a little over an inch on each side. It makes you want to remove the fender trim and it would still give off that 60's Defender vibe. You'd need 1.5" spacers to get back to a normal stance.

If I change rims with 17x7J ET15 ones, I would go from 4.31' of backspace to 4.6". Increasing the backspace by about 0.3". To correct that I will need (grudgingly) to add 0.25- 0.5" or so thick spacers. Since I have flares on the LC, I'm probably going to go with the 0.5" ones. As has been suggested earlier I'll sell the 245/65R17s and get some 285/70R17s. That is jf/when I finally get the LC back from the machine shop doing a rebuild of the previous engine rebuild. But that's long rant for another day..... Let's just say that I know now why the guy left town not too long after he did my rebuild. Someone let me know if i missed anything. Thanks.

That is a 29.5" tall tire even the stock tire would have been about 2" larger than that. I supposed you could run it for a while just to wear them out but they will look pretty small on the the truck.
Some FJ80s came with 235/75r/15 tires as OE. That's actually smaller than his tire.

Walrus, I doubt you would need spacers for a quarter of an inch difference?
