My wife and I are gonna sell the volvo for a newer cruiser. I am wanting one for travel and maybe some towing here and there. We have an FJ62 for our trail truck so looking to add another. Going to check out a 99 for 17500 at a dealer with the rear locker. Ive briefly read some info in the 100 section but would like any real time advice, like or dislikes, how is the power in the hills, etc etc. Cant spend much over 18,000. Thats why the 99 looks good to me. Thanks

I just bought a 99' with 108k miles...Gold/tan lockers...Perfect interior, 1 owner, no wrecks/paintwork, I would let it go for $17k, bottom dollar...Though I wont tell you what I paid for it, it is well worth this price...like new Michelins, bone stock.

Asheville, NC area

Power was great with myself, 2 @ adults, 2 @ 1yr olds and the cargo area filled to the roof with all the crap needed to support us for a 5 day trip to Sunriver. Went over Santiam pass to get there, took Mt. Hood on the way home. I never wanted for more power. Very comfortable ride (the LX has AHC/adjustable suspension), as well as a comfortable interior.

I spent $18.5k 11 months ago for a 98 LX w/115k miles, interior and exterior had seen better days, though it cleaned up pretty well. I've seen some ads on craigslist and autotrader for 100 series LCs in the $15-16k range recently.

Great rig! Plenty of power no BMW but nice. You can haul or tow in comfort and safety. 2000 have many improvements over 99. I am in Eugene and just saw a good looking 2000 LX470 with 104,000 and they want $18900 for it. If you want I would be happy to check it out for you. I can also see how flexable they are in price. Let me know. Happy to help a NW cruiser!

2000 changes from 1999 Lancruiser
Drivetrain
VSC (Vehicle Skid Control) added
A-TRAC (Active Traction Control) added
EBD (Electronic Brake Force Distribution) added
Rear Differential Locker was no longer available as an option
Front differential was changed from a 2 pinion to a 4 pinion unit.

Lexus LX470 Differences

The Lexus LX470 share the same drivetrain and the 100 Series Land Cruiser, but there are distinct differences in both appearance and appointments. In some cases items that were added to the 100 Series in later model years, was available since introduction on the LX470. In some cases some items were never offered in the Land Cruiser. The major technical changes occurred at about the same time. Below is a partial listing of the different items from the LX470:

The highbeam headlights are the multi–reflector type and the lowbeam headlights and the foglights are the projector type.
Body cladding on the doors and quarter panels
Power telescoping and tilt steering column available from 1998 onwards
Combination meter design is different using backlit gauges and needles
Wheel design is different from the Land Cruiser
Front and rear Auto AC systems standard equipment from 1998 onwards
Active Height Control Suspension and Adaptive Variable Suspension (AHC & AVS) standard equipment from 1998 onwards.

2000
A genuine leather with wood steering and a wood shift knob have been provided as optional equipment.

First...what are you going to tow? Second...there is a dark green '98 on a used lot here in Reno with $13,995 on the windshield...don't know anything more about it than that...let me know if you want the dealer's name, etc. & I can drive by. IIWY since it sounds like this will be mostly street type rig get an '00 + with TRAC and VSC if you can.

FWIW, I paid $13,800 for mine...Average book is 13,500...Not KBB, wholesale black book....He should come down at LEAST $1500-2000.

At least on the '03+, the dash lights are LED's. The earlier LX's may be like that, too.

Thanks for all the feedback. That 2000 in eugene sounds promising. Im going this morning to check out the truck so we will see how it goes. :bounce: Looking to tow a small camper at some point. Wonder how hard it would be to tow my FJ62? Hmmm

Isn't the 3FE only like 150hp? That's about the same weight to hp ratio as my old 4runner w/ 22re, so I'd guess okay on the flats but slow on the hills at altitude. Speed difference on I-17 between Phoenix and Flagstaff going up the big climb is 3rd gear @ 35mph in the 4runner (as fast as it will go w/ 2 adults, dog, and gear for 2) vs. 70-80mph in the LX (faster if you don't mind burning more fuel, and that's w/ a child, more gear, 40 lb kennel, etc.). The 2UZ breezes up hills. Near sea level like in OR/WA, the engine won't labor at all while at 10K ft, it will rev up as you blow by other cars w/ ease.

After having done the research myself, 17,5 is too high for that one. I was test driving a 99 with 96K on it for 2 days (Dealer), but they would not come down from 17,8.
I will tell you I was glad the great folks in hear talked me into the 2000. If at all possible I would go for a high mileage 2003 with the 5-speed, but if not, go for the 2000 with the goodies mentioned above.

I will close with this: a 2000 with nearly 100K or just over drops in price - much lower than the one you mentioned and the 4 I drove.

Let me know if I can help!

I just purchased an immaculate 99 with a locker, 82k miles, brand new tires, and all service records with services by Toyota for 17,800. This was purchased in Dublin CA. It took me three months to find it. I wanted a white one with service records and a verifyable history. I found it on Craigslist.

After owning the car for about a month, my wife and I love it. Our other cars are a 2003 BMW 3Series and a 96 Jeep Cherokee for comparison.

We are completely satisfied with the power, comfort, and convenience features. The only downside for me at this point is the 13.5-14 MPG and the necessity to run premium fuel.

How the heck do you get 23.5 MPG:flipoff2: :censor:
Please tell me your secret:cheers:

On the way home from work I checked out the LX. I am leaving for the weekend so I figure I will look it over and drive it. I will give my oponion based on owning 2 LC and have driven 7 different LX while shopping.
This one is clean and in great shape. Here are some stats.
2000 LX 470 100,500 miles asking 18,995 (below wholsale KBB) It has every option they came with in 2000 and even a few my 04 TLC does not have.
Dark green outside, tan inside.
Outside is straight and clean as is the engine. Could not even hear the motor running. Inside is like new. carpets are almost spotless as is the leather. Everything works as does the suspension, low gears, diff locks etc. Test drive was excellent. Smooth, track straight, brakes are perfect.
They gave me a carfax and good history.
Bought in Portland and leased for 3 years and 3 months returned with 70,000 on it. Bought in 2004 by this car lot in Eugene, a sales man owned it for 3 months then the owner of the lot bought it for his wife. More like a 2 owner rig. Owner says they did regular maintance and recent brakes but did not do the 90K service which is timing belt, water pump etc. Room to negotiate on that one!
It has a tow hitch
Rest of the carfax is clean.

Would I buy this LX? Yes
I would try to negotiate to 18K to cover the 90K service they did not do.
I know others will chime in that they got better deals but not in the NW. This is clean and worth a serious look if your LC does not work out.

Good Luck
John

You'll always find better deals after you buy something, and your in the NorthWest.
a) It's starting to snow and winter is here.
b) The LC or LX is a proven rig up there.
c) They know what they have for the season.
Try to deal with them, walk in with check in hand and say "lets talk"
What's the worst they say, no. Get it checked out first though, I was shopping for a Subaru for my daughter yesterday and there's some real crap out there. Wait until you find the right one. It took me three months to find mine.

John thanks for offer, very kind of you. I have to report that after spending 8 hours, yes 8 hours around the dealer and toy mech I got my 2ND!!!!!!!! Cruiser. Bought the 99, and fell in love with when I first saw it. Beautiful truck for sure and I love the way it drives, esp the power. Coming from the FJ62 to this is crazy. Im glad we have both though. I appreciate the old cruiser and will continue to enjoy it as our trail truck but I look foward to traveling in the 99. We traded my wifes volvo in and I talked them down about 800 off the price, but after that they werent gonna budge. Ended up financing only like 13,000 which isnt bad. Did the toyota inspection and I watched most of it and then a compression test which came out well. I hope this is right but they said the acceptable range was 142-192?? Mine showed 175+. Hope that is good.
