Look at what the man in the brown shorts brought me!

I went with a 3500# axle with 4 leafs that I can mix and match until I get a good ride. Randy suggested to go with a bit beefier axle and mess with the spring rate (I will not ever get close to the 3500# limit) instead of running the 2000# axle and pushing it when I am loaded for bear.

I could take a few more detail shots but trust me after looking at Redneck Trailers... who are 20 minutes down the road, and Dexter axles, I went with a dude half way across the country and still saved 100's of dollars. And the detail work is amazing, great welds, square as can be, everthing is so spankin' new it is awesome!

Not sure of the big picture but I noticed no trailer brakes. Will this be your offroad/utility trailer behind the 40? Sorry if this has been brought up before elsewhere! What coupler will you be going with? Since you've obviously researched this already, what is the prevailing thought on couplers these days for offroading purposes?

Thanks.

I have decided not to have brakes as of now. However, everything I do will allow me to add them down the road if needed. I will run the wires, and the axle came ready with flanges already welded to mount them up, if the time comes. They will be a good project down the road, but they may not be needed, it all depends on how light or heavy the final weight ends up being.

The Treg is awesome, it works like a U-joint. However, it costs some serious bones... that said, I am going with a tried and true pintle/ball combo, and a interchangeable reciever style lunette (ring) for off road, and a standard 2" ball coupler when on road.

For me this was a issue of how much coin I wanted to spend, and I already owned a pintle/ball combo.

Hope it helps, got steel quotes today... shouldn't be long now.

I've never seen a Treg, got any links?

I see that Roll N' Lock cost about $180 (from Adventure Trailer) but it's a pricey option too.

Do pintles provide "clang free" coupling?

Same thing as the Roll in lock with a poly block as the pivot.

Drew if it comes out half as nice as your bumper build its going to be good.
Check out the pics in the Copper State Cruisers CM thread, nice rig before it went upsidedown.

Oh no! Man are you okay?

Thanks for the compliments, I am getting steel tomorrow! :D :D :D

Finally... I get to get my hands dirty.

Ben, where is your cruiser man? My wife and walked by your house the other day and it wasn't there. What gives?

I Bought a townhouse across the street with a 2 car garage and I actually fit the 40 in it ( Ihad to let all the air out of the tires and I mean alll) but it worked now I dont have to work on the street or drive way. I am putting high steer and a 60 box on it right now you should come see it and introduce me to your wife.

Randy over at ABC is a one stop shop. He will custom build any axle to any specs you want him to... for no extra charge!

I got my axle width at 55" same as a 40 axle track width, and then just ordered it with the 6x.5 lugs. 10 days later it was at my door. Easy as pie... but I have actually never made a pie.

Drew, the 55" measurement is from.............? to ?
You must have specified 3" tube?

Thanks,
Ed

Ed-

55" was the actual measurement from hub face to hub face on the outside of the brake drum housings on my fj40 rear axle. No guessing, I jacked up the rear, I pulled both wheels and measured with acuracy.

As for the 3" tube, it was standard, I did not have to ask for it, nor specify it when I ordered the axle.

Hope it helps.

Drew

isn't it time for a build thread?

Pretty sure you have some sweet steel now!!!
