Hey guys, im an 80 owner right now and I love the thing. My lady has been bugging me lately for a newer "beater" than the 97 so im thinking about picking up a 100 series and shutting her up. Then two months later when things settle down start doing mods on it. Anyhow i know the inline 6's are good for buku miles and im wondering what kinda life people are expecting from the V-8 and the drivetrain of your trucks. I did a quick search then got lazy and figured I would just ask. Thanks!

I am not aware of anyone getting to the original life end of the LC 4.7L V8. It certainly seems like this motor has the propensity to go 300K with proper care. At that I am almost at the 1/2 way point ;) at 146K and couldn't be happier.

The weak link in the 100 series IMO is the CV boots/clamps. You are going to be limited in all practicality to a max front lift of 2" or so without inducing negative steering, caster and/or leaking CV boot issues. But there are many, many upsides to this platform...jump in you will love it!

Thanks! Thats what I needed to hear. The fact that the main weak link you mention is a CV boot issue makes me feel ok... I guess the shopping begins, ill post up some pics whenever i come up with my new to me 100.

I am in a pretty similar situation. I had my 80 pretty much done and my wife didn't like it and wanted something smoother and newer especially with a new child. Now that I am starting to look at hundy's they all seem to have between 100-160k miles already and range in price from 10-16k dollars. If I have to finance 10k dollars on a vehicle with 150k miles I obviously want it to last about double that. Lets rehash some high mileage comparos. P.S. I haven't even driven a 100 yet, everytime I go to a used car lot to drive one they are already being exported. I don't want to bother a personal sale until I'm ready to buy. So my question is to previous 80 owners who upgraded to a 100 what are your thoughts on durability and driveability? This one I only plan on doing Slees 2" kit with diff drop and 285's.

P.S. I'm driving a lifted and locked 90 4-runner for now until I pay off some more bills so a hundy will probably drive like a dream to me!

My 100 is a blast to drive. Never drove/owned an 80. But the V8 sounds and provides ample power. It handles pretty well for it's size. I'm mainly on country/ mountainy 2 lane roads at night and it's a joy. I feel very safe. I wouldn't want another truck. Then again this is the only truck I've ever owned.

I've got 108K and haven't had a hiccup yet. Just watch for cracked manifolds. No side effects on the bad side. Just constant ticking from the engine bay. Both of mine are loud. I'm waiting for headers for the 1000", but can't find any.

Don't drive one until you are are ready to buy. There is no going back if you are looking for some thing to serve as DD duty as well as a trail rig.

My 99LX (although I'm going to sell her) has zero issues. Just hit 100k last month and I bought from a series of private owners so I have all records. Just routine maintance. Just watch out for the 90k service. I have the records for when the PO did it, (I bought @ 92k he did it @ 88k) and it was spendy at the dealer. Drives sooo smooth. I have a 4 mile drive to work and I sometimes wish it was longer:D.

x2 on the boots, but if you are a decent wrench then these are no problemo.

I have had both... an 80 and an 100... The 80 (LX450) was a great tank of a rig.. but underpowered... especially with 33" tires. While the 100 doesn't have great power... it is much better with 33s... rides much smoother.... required no lift to fit the 33's and overall is very comfortable... The day I bought it...driving it back from Reno, NV to Sacaremnto, CA... we were stuck in a horrible snow storm, but the kids slept very soundly the whole time...with the second row seats tilted back.... lol.

No regrets going to a 100...

I agree with this. It really does handle well for it's size, and it does very well off road, even in stock form. Add a mild lift and 33s/34s or 35s and you're going places most vehicles will not, albeit with a LOT of comfort.

Also, the cracking manifolds were only on the earlier years of the 100. Personally, I believe with regular maintenance and good oils, the vehicle will last you for years and years with no problems. I heard the Land Cruiser was supposed to be roadworthy for like 30 years or something like that without major problems. Also noted recently that Toyota tests all their trucks/Land Cruisers to -60 degree working temperature. That was something I found interesting.

I watched the Testing on the 200 series. Wow... Toyota really go out of there way to make sure it's "done".

I'm keeping my 100 for as long as it runs without any major issues (engine, etc) which will probably be another 12-15 years @ 7K miles a year now. Then I'll be hopefully ready for whatever 300 series possibly. I'm sure my tastes will change. But I'll always have a cruiser. There great. Accept for my manifolds.....

i'm at 140K now and I swear the engine runs smoother now than it did new. The mileage hasn't deteriorated at all. I'm still on the original water pump and starter with no signs of problems(knock on wood). I changed the timing belt at 1118k along with the shocks for the second time. Used Bilstein HDs the 2nd time so shouldn't need to do that again. On second set of brakes. I don't rock crawl but do do a lot of mild to moderate off-road on south Texas ranches and in Big Bend national park. it does a great job there. I like it because I can crawl along at 2-3MPH without it surging forward on acceleration as my Tundra does. I do a lot of wildlife photography and it's smooth, quiet ride is essential. It is great in town as it has a superb turning radius compared to my Tundra. i like it so well that the only time i use my Tundra is when I want to carry my bicycle.

We have 225K on my wife's and it's going strong. Bought it with 192K. As mentioned, only issue and nagging maintenance that I need to do is replacing the CV boots. They've been "cracking" at me for about 6 months now, but I don't wheel it, so it's not a huge deal.

2000 purchased with 100k miles, at 150k miles now. No real issues. Cracked manifolds. Drives like a jacked up S500. I have had 4 80s and 4 100s. The 100 is my favorite by far. I would only consider replacing with a 200 however that is about 6 years out.

I agree, do not drive unless ready to buy, they are that good.

Wifey wants me to buy a MDX or Sequoia. You can get them both loaded up with 45-60k miles 04-06 models for around 15-20 grand. I think I would rather spend 15-20k on a 01-03 model with 80-100k miles landcruiser, but now I'm afraid to go drive one because I really need to wait till july or august to purchase!

The MDX is a nice ride. But aftermarket stuff ( bumpers, lifts, and so) do not exsist like they do for the 100. But it's a totally different market.

The sequioya is a larger an cheaper version of the 100 ( in my eyes) but are still well equipt. All 3 that you've listed are reliable. Question is resale/and your thread. Longevity. Certainly the Landcruiser is toyotas ultimate. I beleive in the short term, being 5 years. The MDX and Sequoiya will save you some dollars at time of purchase. But long term, 10 years or 200K+. The 100 will edge ahead. So will the fun factor :)

I've had my LX since new, still going strong and I'm always on it, daily driver. I've driven a brand new ford and after 600 miles of my driving, it was making the weirdest sounds and sounded like it had 100k+. The 100 takes it, loves it and keeps on going.

I just sold my 80 with 235K on the clock and upgraded to a 00 100 series with 98k, the difference between the two are night and day. This 100 series does have a supercharger and that makes a difference - let me tell ya.
Like everyone has said "do not drive one until you are ready to buy" once you drive it you will view your 80 like an ex-girlfriend. :frown: I loved my 80 but I am very happy with the upgrade.
As for longevity, this truck can hit 300K will routine maintenance. By the time it hits 300K you will be ready for the next upgrade.

yup, seems like the V8 is a good one and will last for well over 200K maybe over 300K (if there is still gas available in a few years... :frown:). Talking about gas, the mileage of the 100 is better than the 80 although not a huge difference, maybe a couple of mpgs.

Negative issues: expensive timing belt job every 90K if you go by the book, some front diff issues for the early years, manifolds, and wasn't there a TC or trans issue too for a while (forgot).

Of course, all the goodies: Nav, VSC, ATRAC, bigger, much smoother etc etc

oh, and let's not forget the heated seats!!!!! Yum! :)

100

A lot of great comments so far and I don't have too much more to add. I am the original owner of a 91 80 and I drove it everyday for about 15 years. In 2006, I purchased an 06 100 and now I drive it every day. I kept the 80, however, and I still love driving it. The view is better in the 80 and it drives like a strong tractor. However, if I had to choose one over the other, I would pick the 100 for all the reasons stated above. Much smoother, much quicker, and much safer.

got one

Ok enough is enough, you guys had to run on about how great they are. I saw a nice rock river green one here in VA and made the mistake of bringing the lady and the dog along to check it out last night... If your wondering how I liked it, just say the dog drove home with her in the new one and I drove the hour and a half home watching it from my 80!! It really is a gorgeous car and as soon as I get a chance I will put the pictures in here to show you all what you made me do.

Tommy like they all say, dont drive one until your ready because you wont be buying some sequoia after driving these things. I was in the market for either MDX, GX, RX or ML for the mom car and after Kel drove the Land Cruiser home she doesnt want a new car anymore, she wants the 100! She is still going to get one eventually, because she is deffinately not allowed to take over the 100. Just keep an eye out for the perfect one owner that was well cared for, when you do find it, youll swear its a new car.

Stay tuned for pictures, and mods in 6months to a year when the "new to me" wears off
