I just want to take a moment to have a laugh at the fact that it took me ~$2,500 in parts and shop labor and 3+ months to fix a $4 can of carb cleaner problem. Please laugh WITH me...

That said, I plan to drive the GX for several years and can laugh at it all knowing it should be up to the task, with a few more maintenance items, with minimal other expected repairs, now that it has a new cooling system, fuel deliver system and many new sensors.

@giovanni thanks bud and right?

When I was 16-17, I drove a car for a year that had no rear brakes because I was too young, inexperienced and broke to even ask a shop to look at it and try to fix it (and YouTube wasn’t a thing yet). For a year, I just lived with practically no braking power and knew I had to have a good bit of heads up on traffic stopping, red lights, stops signs and turns.

I saved up enough money to get a newer car, then sold that car to a shade tree mechanic guy in town who test drove the car, poked around, offered me a couple hundred bucks then proceeded to fix the rear drum brakes with two ~$5 parts and drove it away, all brakes working great. That was undoubtedly the situation that fully seated my interest in working on my own vehicles and developing the mentality that if somethings wrong, it’s probably an easier fix than you think, so at least make an attempt to fix it.

I know my choices have me into this repair way more than it should’ve been, but I’d do it all again just to know I didn’t leave this $4 problem out there without even trying.

I can certainly relate to the broke kid and fixing everything yourself. Lucked out that car had a factory service manual because most in US haven't heard of it.

It was a '84 Mitsubishi Cordia Turbo.... early throttle body EFI... a 5 speed with a electro/vacuum actuated 5th gear. How in the pre-internet world would I have troubleshoot that without an FSM. I wondered why 5th gear was the same as 4th RPMwise... a burned out fuse :)

Used a quart of oil about ever 150 miles.. I think 2-stroke motor would have used less. Valve guide seals.... I think half of them were gone. It would kill a spark plug on cylinder 3 at around 500 miles. :)

All I had was the Chilton's and Haynes repair manuals.
But they didn't help much after I squeezed in a V8 into my Chevy Vega.

Man, got a notification on this thread and came here to accidentally relive this nightmare.

Also realized (finally) that the Tundra was the right truck for me. Took a short detour in a Tacoma after the GX but got t-boned in it and ultimately moved on to a 2020 Tundra that I’ve had a year or so now and am enjoying.

Cheers ole pals
