I have the front driveshaft off and was thinking of doing the lockout 2WD conversion.
The wife says it is unsafe to drive the 80 without the front driveshaft.
She says that it unsafe to drive it becouse it was designed to be AWD and driving it in 2WD is DANGER,DANGER,DANGER.

Other than the ABS. What could go wrong???

"what could go wrong"???
didn't you hear the boss give you some "suggestions"???

Well in Australia they were available with a part time tansfercase...

As for unsafe, I would say no ABS is it other than the obvious disadvantages of 2WD versus AWD.

Kurt, I have driven mine like that for awhile with no problems. I believe others have as well. There's a faq on hubs if you want to read it. Personally I don't dig the part time conversion, but that's just me.

Getting married, now that's unsafe!

I drove mine without the front shaft installed when I was doing a gear swap and my diffs were different front and rear. I used the center diff lock button to keep the tcase locked. It works fine as long as your diff lock works. There is no reason at all not to have part time if that what you want to do.

I think for those that live where they need 4wd all winter due to snow the full time system is a really great idea.

Part time 4wd my give you an extra 1 MPG. You may need to make some changes to the brake wiring if you want to keep your ABS brakes and still use part time 4wd. Normally the ABS system turns off when you lock the center diff.

Does your wife work for Toyota or hold automotive engineering titles?

What makes her an authority aside from "different is bad"? Just curious to see if there is something more to this or if you are just whipped :D

Just curious...the part time conversion approach has fans and critics, but I believe it is generally accepted that it can be done and it safe to do if you are aware of the impacts it will make on the driving characteristics of the vehicle.

Chris,

Can you please share with us your brake wiring info? I would like to know how to do this with the front drive shaft disconnected and 2 front wheel hubs in "free" postiton. Thanks.

I don't have my FSM here (I am moving and everything is in storage), but I think all you need to do is cut the wire that goes from the center diff lock system to the ABS computer. This should allow ABS with the center diff locked.

you may be able to trick the ABS to be "on" with the center locked but it still will not work with the hubs disconnected

with free hubs the birf and therefore the ABS ring mounted to it does not spin, without a speed signal ABS cannot operate, since you have disconnected the tire from the ring the computer does not know wheel speed or sudden slowing so it cannot calculate brake pressure

I assume (hope?) the ABS computer would see rear wheel speed not matching front wheel speed throw a code and failsafe “off” but I don't know if there would be possible brake side effects, if the ABS computer is stupid enough it may think the fronts are locked and reduce brake pressure looking for wheel spin up that will never occur,
:bust:  :slap:
